    • A method is disclosed for preparing an acrylic-styrene-acrylonitrile (ASA) resin, which comprises the steps of: (a) polymerizing a mixture comprising at least one acrylate monomer and at least one crosslinking agent to form a rubber substrate, followed by (b) polymerizing a mixture of monomers in the presence of the rubber substrate, at least one of which monomers is selected from the group consisting of vinyl aromatic monomers and at least one of which monomers is selected from the group consisting of monoethylenically unsaturated nitrile monomers, and optionally followed by (c) polymerizing one or more monomers in at least one subsequent stage in the presence of the rubber substrate from (b), wherein the one or more monomers comprise at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of (C 1 -C 12 ) alkyl- and aryl-(meth)acrylate monomers; wherein the amount of unreacted crosslinking agent remaining in the rubber substrate before step (b) is less than 5.6 micromoles per gram based on the dry weight of the rubber substrate. The invention also relates to a molding composition comprising an ASA resin comprising an elastomeric phase derived from a rubber substrate comprising structural units derived from at least one crosslinking agent; wherein the rubber substrate comprises less than 5.6 micromoles of unreacted crosslinking agent per gram of rubber substrate based on dry weight of the rubber substrate. Articles comprising said ASA resin and/or made from said molding composition are also disclosed.

    • A process for producing graft polymer particles by bringing into contact with a coagulant a polymer latex (A) obtained by graft-polymerizing one or more monomers including methyl methacrylate with a rubbery polymer, which comprises: a coagulation step in which the polymer latex (A) is injected onto a stirring tank through an immersion nozzle which has an orifice having a sectional area of 40 mm or larger and is disposed so as to inject the latex in the same direction as the flow in the stirring tank, at a linear velocity of 50 to 350 mm/s as measured at the outlet of the nozzle to bring the latex into contact with the coagulant and coagulate the graft polymer, thereby obtaining a slurry; and a solidification step in which the resultant slurry is kept at 60 to 100 DEG C to solidify the coagulated graft polymer. By the process, graft polymer particles reduced in the content of fine particles and having a high bulk specific gravity and excellent powder properties can be obtained without the necessity of using an organic solvent or a special apparatus. Thus, polymer particles with excellent powder properties can be stably produced at low cost.

    • The invention relates to the production of particle-shaped rubber-elastic polymers by carrying out the following steps: (1) dispersion of a11: between 85 and 100 weight percent ethylenically unsaturated monomers, the homopolymers of which are rubber-elastic, as component A11, and a12: between 0 and 15 weight percent cross-linking monomers as component A12, in water in the presence of a protective colloid and an emulsifier to obtain a dispersion with a mean particle diameter of between 0.08 and 8 mu m; (2) polymerisation of the droplets with a radical polymerisation initiator; and possibly (3) graft polymerisation of the mixture obtained in step (2) in the presence of ethylenically unsaturated monomers.

    • The present invention relates to composite water swellable elastomers consisting of a hydrophobic elastomeric component and hydrophilic polymeric component in which the hydrophobic as well as the hydrophilic component are forming a continuous or communicating matrix. The hydrophobic elastomeric component is selected from the group consisting of a filled or unfilled, vulcanized or non-vulcanized silicone, natural rubber, synthetic butadiene-styrene rubber, butadiene rubber, isoprene rubber, isobutylene-isoprene rubber, ethylene-propylene rubber, ethylenepropylenediene rubber, chlorobutyl rubber, bromobutyl rubber, chloroprene rubber, butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber, acrylate rubber, urethane rubber, fluorocarbon rubber, chlorosulfonated rubber, polyethylene rubber, chlorinated polyethylene rubber, ethylene vinyl acetate rubber, polysulfide rubber, hydrine rubber. The hydrophilic polymeric component is being formed by a polymer based on the hydrophilic monomers being selected from the group consisting of glycolmonomethacrylates and acrylates, dihydroxyestermonomethacrylates, acrylamide, methacrylamide, N-substituted acrylamide and methacrylamide, N,N-substituted acrylamide and methacrylamide, methacrylic and acrylic acids, N-vinylpyrrolidon and their combinations. The method of preparation of the water swellable elastomers according to the invention consists in that in the inside of the hydrophobic elastomeric component matrix and/or the filler the precipitation or solution polymerization of a hydrophilic monomer or monomer mixture in the presence of one or more solvents, a cross-linking agent and initiator of radical polymerization is performed. The process of precipitation or solution polymerization according to the invention can be repeated one or more times using the same or different monomers, solvents, cross-linking agents and initiators. According to the invention the precipitation or solution polymerization can be performed either only in the swollen surface layer or only in the hydrophobic matrix or only in the hydrophilic filler or in the hydrophobic matrix and the hydrophilic filler.
