    • A winch intended for mounting at ground level over a vertical shaft communicating with an underground duct, and for drawing equipment through the duct using a chain, comprises a pair of rams (10, 12) coupled together in a parallel spaced apart relationship by a first chain gripper assembly (16) mounted on the ram cylinders, and a second gripper assembly (22) mounted on the ends of the ram pistons (20). Each gripper assembly (16, 22) has a central passageway for receiving a chain disposed between and parallel to the rams (10, 12), each passageway having associated therewith a respective pair of pivotable clamping jaws which act to prevent relative downward movement of the chain but to allow relative upward movement of the chain. When the rams (10, 12) are reciprocated first one, then the other gripper assembly clamps the chain so that with repeated reciprocation the chain is caused to move upwards in a stepwise manner. A pivotal mounting device (14) defining two axes of rotation with respect to the supporting base structure allows the rams (10, 12) automatically to take up a position parallel to the chain obviating the need for accurate positioning of the winch.

In order to make the tightening device easy to handle and operate while providing favourable force directions the one-way coupling in accordance with the invention also comprises at least one pair of cog-wheels (16, 17), cog-wheel (17) of which is connected to the strap winding-on core (2) whereas the other cog-wheel (16) is connected to the pivotal lever (3), the centres of said intermeshing cog-wheels coinciding with the centres of rotation of respectively the strap winding-on core and the pivotal lever, said one-way coupling being releasable and arranged to force the strap winding-on core in the strap winding-on direction, when the pivotal lever is pivoted towards the frame.

    • The proposed method of winding a flexible element onto a drum permits the use of very simple lever-type lifting-transport devices in restricted spaces and involves tensioning the flexible element and affixing it to the drum at any intermediate point, rotating the drum in steps about an axis of rotation in the direction of wind and, between contiguous steps, reversing the position of the axis of rotation. The drum for winding a flexible element in the claimed manner is formed by two side plates separated by a distance equal to the width of the flexible element. One plate is provided with an element for fixing the drum to the lever, said element being located outside the space between the planes of the plates. The central part of the drum onto which the flexible element is wound is formed by two pins joined to the plates and spaced along the line of the lever to form a slot in which the flexible element is accommodated and secured. Various combinations of the connections described constitute the various embodiments of the proposed drum.
