The process provides for the steps of: (a) transporting the sheet of web material in a first direction; (b) applying indicia to the sheet from a print cylinder, the print cylinder having a first angular position; (c) imparting lines of termination to the sheet of web material with a rotatable blade, the rotatable blade having a second angular position; (d) calculating a position error by comparing the first angular position of the print cylinder and the second angular position of the rotatable blade; and, (e) adjusting the second angular position of the rotatable blade according to the position error.

The apparatus can automatically finish books of different thicknesses. The operations of cover trimming, glue cutting and placement, and collating are all carried out by aligning to a common alignment edge. The glue cutter (29) cuts glue strips of variable width and the collator (13) collates printed sheets by synchronized tamping. The apparatus can be used with in-line, on-demand page printers and in-line, on-demand cover printers. The apparatus can be used in book vending machines.

The print monitor makes it possible to print a print monitor symbol (15) in a blank section of the document (12) when the latter is printed. 摘要： A booklet (200) is produced including an outer sheet (210) and an inner sheet (250) folded and nested together. A print image (38) having a thickness is printed where it is between the two sheets when they nest together. A cut length (280) is calculated using the thicknesses (215, 255) of the sheets (210, 250) and the thickness of the print image, so that when the sheets are folded and the inner sheet (250) is nested into the outer sheet (210), the edges of the inner sheet (250) will not protrude beyond the edges of the outer sheet (210). The inner sheet (250) is cut to the calculated cut length (280) either before or after printing. The cut inner sheet and the outer sheet are folded and nested together to produce the booklet (200).
