    • A method (Figure 3) for creating and managing customized print media through an enhanced content management process is disclosed. A print media customer, which may be an individual or organization, is profiled to determine content preferences (step 122). Profiling may be based on face-to-face or electronic surveys, Internet usage patterns, buying patterns, or other criteria. Content associated with the preferences is obtained and analyzed (step 124). Content affinities, or relationships between the content and other content in a content network, are determined, and may influence the print media produced (steps 128 and 130). A history of the content is maintained, to ensure content is not duplicated (step 126). Both substantive and non-substantive content, such as advertising content, is used. Both the content and layout of the print media can be customized (step 132).

    • The shared internet storage resources provides Internet-based file storage, retrieval, access, control, and manipulation for user. Additionally, an easy-to-use user interface is provided both for a browser or stand-alone application. The entire method provides means by which users can establish, use, and maintain files on the internet in a manner remote from their local computers yet in a manner that is similar to the file manipulation used on their local computers. A high capacity or other storage system is attached to the internet via an optional internet network that also serves to generate and direct metadata regarding the stored files. A web server (140) using a CGI, Java-based, or other interface transmits and retrieves TCP/IP packets or other internet information through a load balancer/firewall (110) by using XML to wrap the data packets. File instructions may be transmitted over the Internet to the Shared Resource System. The user's account may be password protected so that only the user may access his or her files. On the user's side, a stand-alone client application (142) or JavaScript object interpreted through a browser provide two means by which the XML or other markup language data stream may be received and put to use by the user. Internet-to-internet file transfer may be effected by directly downloading to the user's account space.

    • An encoding system (100) includes data in an underlying image by controlling or modifying halftone settings, which are used in the associated printing color process to produce a hard-copy document or an on screen image. The system (100) uses a halftone encoder (104) to encode the data into the image by selectively varying, in accordance with the data, the order of various color channels, and/or the screen angles using an angle table (105o) and/or spatial frequencies, or scales using a scale table (105r), of associated halftone screens. The system (100) encodes an N-bit payload in the image at the halftone encoder (104) by modifying the halftone settings of certain or all of the color channels in accordance with the data, thus using the color channels also as "data channels." The system (100) prints the encode image at a printer (108) by incorporating the modified halftone settings into the respective halftone screens, and applying the inks in a conventional manner.

    • A method for converting an analog document reproduction device to a digital document reproduction device is provided, wherein the analog document reproduction device has a light source (28) for illuminating at least a portion of a document, a mirror (32) for receiving the illumination reflected by the document, a first lens (36) for receiving the illumination from the mirror and for projecting said illumination onto a photoconductor (38). The photoconductor (38) is capable of converting the illumination into a toner image of the document. The method comprises the steps of providing an assembly having a second lens (60) for receiving the illumination reflected from the document and having a light conversion member (58) for converting the illumination into a voltage signal. The assembly is installed in the analog document reproduction device so that the assembly can receive the illumination reflected from the document in a digital mode. A control module (52) is installed for converting the voltage signal into digital information and a user interface is provided for selecting the digital mode, the user interface being connected to the control module (52).
