    • An adapter (10, 110) for use with a powered grinding tool having a driven grinding wheel (13) has a pivotally movable mounting part (16, 128) on a body thereof, and a drill bit holder (15, 116) engageable with the mounting part in either of two orientations for sharpening a tip of a drill bit (20, 124) clamped in a set position in the drill bit holder at said grinding wheel (13), the engagement being completed when the drill bit engages on a stop bar (34, 136) at the front of the mounting part. A powered grinding tool having the features of the adapter formed as part thereof is also disclosed.

The drill sharpener uses a small diameter grinding wheel operated at high speed to provide cutting rates comparable to large industrial sharpeners. The drill chuck is of short length, relative to most of the drills to be sharpened, and is open at a back end, enabling the manipulation of the drill by its shank relative to the drill chuck when disposed in the alignment subassembly.

    • A method of, and apparatus for, treating an elongate rotary tool (22) that presents a sharp cutting edge (30) are described.
