    • A method of extinguishing a fire includes pre-positioning a fire extinguishing device (12) which includes at least two reactants, and activating them to react together to create solid particulate products, each having a diameter of about one micron or less, to chemically inhibit the chain reactions of the fire flame and to extinguish the fire when the products come into contact therewith. The first reactant is potassium chlorate, potassium perchlorate, potassium dichromate, cesium nitrate, or potassium nitrate. The second reactant serves as a reduction agent. In one embodiment, a modified device (40) is submerged in a liquid coolant and includes structure (90) for preventing entry of coolant into the device (40) while allowing the escape of the products into the coolant when activated. Alternatively, another modified device (400) using the reactants generates a non-toxic smoke created from the solid particulate products.
