    • A variable pitch band saw is provided which has a toothed edge comprising a plurality of recurrent groups of teeth. Each group includes an unset leading tooth and a plurality of teeth that are alternately set laterally to opposite sides of the saw. Each tooth has a cutting edge disposed in a predetermined cutting plane and an accumulated pitch distance between it and the next preceding saw tooth having a cutting edge coplanar with said predetermined plane. The size of gullet area of each tooth is made directly proportional to the accumulated pitch distance of that tooth so that the size of the gullet areas are the same for all teeth having the same accumulated pitch. Each of the tooth groups may include teeth of varying height and degrees of lateral set. Some of the teeth of each group having a pitch measured from the tip of one of said teeth to the tip of a tooth adjacent the one to avoid uniform tooth spacing between all the teeth to the group.

    • The present invention concerns a method for forming longitudinal undercut grooves in wood products. It also concerns a cutting blade (5, 12, 14, 15) that could be used in the method. According the invention a longitudinal straight groove (4) is formed in a wooden work piece (1) in a first step, for instance by means of a circular saw blade (2). In a second step the work piece (1) is moved pass the cutting blade (5, 12, 14, 15) to form an undercut groove (7, 8, 9, 10), which undercut groove is either symmetric or asymmetric. The cutting blade (5, 12, 14, 15) has a number of cutting heads (6). The cutting width of the cutting heads increase from a first cutting head (6a) to a last cutting head (6b).

    • A band saw blade (10) having relatively extended pitch patterns of eight or more teeth exhibits relatively low noise and vibration during cutting operations, and substantially uniform tooh loading characteristics. The band saw blade (10) defines set patterns within each pitch pattern, and each set pattern is defined by an unset leading tooth (12, 18) followed by a plurality of offset trailing teeth (14, 16, 20, 22, 24, 26). Each tooth within each set pattern defines a pitch ("P") between the respective tooth and the preceding tooth in the cutting direction of the saw blade, and an accumulated pitch between the respective tooth and the preceding tooth of like set direction in the cutting direction of the saw blade. The ratio of pitch to accumulated pitch for each tooth within each set pattern increases from one tooth to the next in the direction opposite the cutting direction of the saw blade for substantially uniformly distributing the chip load over the teeth of the saw blade. In addition, during cutting operations, each tooth entering or exiting the work piece defines a different pitch or forcing frequency than does every other tooth simultaneously entering or exiting the workpiece, or successively entering or exiting the work piece, to thereby minimize noise and vibration during cutting operations.
