    • First and second rotary units (110, 120) comprises a pair of rotators (111, 121) disposed oppositely, and hitting bodies (130, 140) fixed rotatably to shafts (113, 123) spanning between the rotators. The hitting bodies (130, 140) have a specified fitting gap with the shafts and are fixed such that a part of outer circumference thereof can be located on the outside of the outer circumference of the rotator. When the first and second rotary units rotate at a high speed, the hitting bodies thereof collide sequentially against an object to be machined to cut the object. Cutting depth by the hitting bodies of the second rotary unit is deeper than the cutting depth by the hitting bodies of the first rotary unit and the hitting bodies of at least one rotary unit collide against the object at a speed not lower than the critical hitting speed. An object comprising a single member or a composite members can be cut using a single cutting tool and the lifetime and reliability of a cutting apparatus are enhanced.

    • A cutting/stripping apparatus, and methods of operation thereof, which include at least one first blade for rotary motion about the central axis of a multi-layered workpiece, and at least two, second members/blades reciprocally movable along essentially linear axes, toward and away from the one another while remaining equally spaced on opposite sides of the central axis. The general structure of the apparatus may be a single, orbiting blade to provide cutting of the outer layer about its entire periphery and a pair of members movable toward and away from one another to engage the outer layer. The pair of members may have linear, opposed edges, or may have V-shaped or radiused (curved) cutting edges. Electronic controls and software, together with selective operator inputs which define operation of the apparatus, permit cutting the outer layer of the workpiece by either the rotary blade or the reciprocating blades.

    • A slicing blade (310) is mounted in a slicing station at an offset rotation axis (320) from a midway axis (240) passing generally equidistant between at least first and second product loaves (230, 270) disposed in a side-by-side arrangement. The slicing edge (325, 330, 340) of the blade generates substantially similar but oppositely directed product throwing angles for slices with respect to the midway axis. A single rotation of the slicing edge results in a penetration gradient into each of the loaves that diminishes in magnitude over the single rotation. To this end, the slicing edge may have a profile defined by a plurality of constant radius sections (325, 330, 340). Each section has a section center (345, 350, 355) defining the center of the constant radius section, and each section center differs from the section center of an adjacent constant radius section. This arrangement provides great control of slices (500) from loaves as well as resulting in substantially concurrent severence of slices from the product loaves to facilitate decrease in slicing cycle duration.

    • A rotary knife fixture for cutting vegetable products such as raw potatoes into spiral shapes. The knife fixture includes a ring-shaped blade holder driven rotatably within a hydraulic product flow path. The blade holder includes at least one cutting blade, wherein the blade is twisted from a generally longitudinally aligned center axis outwardly in opposite circumferential directions with a sharpened leading edge set at a desired pitch angle. By controlling the pitch angle of the blade in relation to the blade rotational speed and velocity at which the potato travels along the hydraulic flow path, the resultant spiral cut shape is selected. By using multiple cutting blades at known axially spaced positions and selecting the angular position of each cutting blade in succession, the number of spiral shapes cut from each potato is selected. The blades can have a nontextured straight-cut edge, or a textured crinkle-cut edge, or a combination.

    • Apparatus for supporting a coaxial cable, or the like, and effecting cutting and stripping operations to remove a portion of one or more layers which concentrically cover a central conductor. A single blade, having a circular cutting edge, is moved in an orbital path about the cable with rotary motion of a motor translated to orbital motion of the blade through a plurality of plates relatively movable on crossed, linear, roller bearings and a shaft eccentrically affixed to the motor with the shaft and motor axes at an acute angle to one another. The shaft extends through a spherical bearing mounted in one of the plates, thereby translating nutational motion of the shaft to orbiting motion of the plate which is directly attached to the blade. A unique clamping assembly includes a pair of jaws having respective gear racks engaging a single pinion gear on a motor output shaft for linear movement of the jaws by equal distances in opposite directional. A microprocessor controls the level of current to the motor, thereby adjusting the clamping force applied to the cable, and increases this force during the stripping operation, when maximum axial force is applied to the cable. A guide bushing establishes the radial position of the cable axis and is stationary during blade movement, thereby permitting the opening in the bushing to closely approximate the cable diameter. The position of the bushing is adjustable to align the central axis of the bushing opening with that of the blade cutting edge. The bushing is also movable to an inoperative position to permit unobstructed access to the blade for replacement thereof. A pair of gripping members are movable to engage the severed portion of the covering layer to assist in the stripping operation, and a unique combination of hardware and software is provided for calibrating the position of the gripping members at equal distances from the axis of the cable.
