    • In one aspect, a tool support for a pipe machining apparatus includes a support arm defining a groove therein and configured to support a tool, and a guide member at least partially positioned in the groove to allow movement of the support arm in a first direction and inhibit movement of the support arm in a second direction. In one aspect, a tool support includes a one-piece unitarily formed body member defining a cavity there through, and a tool support arm at least partially positioned in the cavity and configured to translate within the cavity. In one aspect, a tool support includes a first translating member configured to translate a tool toward and away from a pipe, and a second translating member configured to translate the tool toward and away from the pipe.     • An apparatus (20) for counterboring a pipe (25) includes an expander unit (24), a shaft (26), a flywheel (30) rotatably and slidably mounted on the shaft, and a frame (34) mounted on the flywheel to be movable in a radial direction. The frame includes a tool mount (50) and a guide wheel mount (52) connected to one another by guide wheel arm (51). A cutting tool (56) is adjustably mounted to the tool mount and a guide wheel (72) is rotatably mounted on the guide wheel mount. During counterboring, the cutting tool travels with the flywheel into the interior of the pipe and the guide wheel travels outside of the pipe. The radially innermost point of the guide wheel is radially spaced apart from the cutting tool to define the wall thickness of the counterbore to be machined into the pipe.

    • A method for inserting a valve in a line includes the step of providing a valve assembly (10) having a valve body (11) with two sections (17, 18) adapted to be assembled over an existing pipe (14) and gate (12) adapted to cut through the pipe (14) as the gate (12) advances from an open position toward a closed position. The method proceeds by installing the valve assembly (10) on the existing pipe (10) with the gate (12) in the open position and then moving the gate (12) toward the closed position to thereby cut through the pipe (14). A rotatable pipe-cutter version of a valve assembly (10) constructed according to the invention includes at least one cutting tooth (21) and the valve body (11) is configured so that an operator (13) can rotate the body (11) on the existing pipe (14) while the gate (12) is advanced toward the closed position. A guillotine version, suited for use with pipes made of polyethylene and other sliceable materials, includes a gate (12) with a cutting edge that slices through the pipe (14) as the gate (12) is advanced toward the closed position.
