    • A magnetic drill press includes a main housing, a drill unit supported by the main housing for relative movement therewith in a direction of a rotational axis of the drill unit, and a base coupled to the main housing for selectively magnetically latching to a ferromagnetic workpiece. The base includes a magnet holder, a fixed magnet assembly supported within the magnet holder, a rotatable magnet assembly supported within the magnet holder, and a transmission. The transmission includes an input, an output coupled to the rotatable magnet assembly for rotating the rotatable magnet assembly relative to the fixed magnet assembly through a predetermined rotation angle, and a gear train positioned between the output and the input. The gear train is configured to provide a variable gear ratio between the output and the input during at least a portion of the predetermined rotation angle.

    • In the pocket hole apparatus (10) of the present invention, a table (14) reciprocates linearly (22) relative to a base (12). An anvil (16) is fixed relative to the base (12) and holds the workpiece (2) on a sloped top surface (102) at the desired angle for the pocket hole (4). A drill spindle (18) with a drill bit (30) is fixed relative to the table (14). After the workpiece (2) is mounted to the anvil (16), the table is moved to drill the pocket hole. Optionally, a second spindle (20) on the opposite side of the anvil (16) predrills the pocket hole (4) when the table (14) is first moved to a predrill position (28). The spindle (18) is enabled or disabled by a latching mechanism (44). The spindle (18) is mounted to a rail (40) that is slidably mounted to the table (14) so that the rail (40) can slide perpendicularly (42) thereby adjusting the spacing between pocket holes ( 4).

    • A power tool for drilling a hole in a workpiece made of wood or a wood material. The power tool generally includes a tool housing defining a handle and a motor contained within the tool housing that includes an output shaft that spins about a motor axis. A gear housing is connected to the tool housing. An output spindle is supported for rotation about a spindle axis in the gear housing. The spindle axis is disposed about ninety degrees from the motor axis. A gear portion on the output shaft is engaged to a gear portion on the output spindle. The motor and the gear portions are configured to rotate the output spindle at a speed in range from about five thousand revolutions per minute to about twenty-five thousand revolutions per minute. A cutting member is connected to the output spindle. The cutting member includes fluted cutting blades. A carriage assembly includes a base member and a head member connected by a first post having a first compliant member and a second post. The head member slides relative to the first and second posts and against a force exerted by the first compliant member when the head member is moved toward the base member to pass the cutting member through the base member to engage the workpiece. The base member includes a generally planar face on a bottom surface of the base member that is generally perpendicular to the spindle axis.
