    • In described examples, a power-over-Ethernet (PoE) control system (10) includes a powered device (PD) that is configured to receive a voltage signal via an Ethernet connection (16), and which includes a PoE signal receiver (20) configured to indicate a nominal power level via the received voltage signal. The system (10) also includes a power sourcing equipment (PSE) device (12) configured to generate the voltage signal and to measure a class current of the voltage signal to determine the nominal power level. The PSE device (12) includes a PoE controller (18) configured to provide a power setting command as a function of the nominal power level to the PoE signal receiver (20) via the voltage signal, so the PD can operate at a power level that is based on the power setting command.

    • An electrical switch unit (1, 60, 61, 70) is provided for controlling the supply of electrical energy to an appliance (7, 65) that also has its own electrical control switch (38), in particular a water heater. The timer means is operative to become activated consequent on the initiation of current flow through the detector circuit to effect closure of said load switch after a predetermined optionally adjustable time delay (that is independent of real-time), and to maintain the load switch in a closed condition for a time period after which the load switch is returned to its normally open condition. The invention extends to an electrical distribution box including such a switch and the switch may have a current sensor for association with otherwise independent electrical conductors serving other appliances to disable the timer if no other appliance is operative.

    • An electric switching device for alternating current comprises two branches (2, 3) connected in parallel in a current path and having each at least two contact members (4-7) connected in series. A semiconductor device (8) is adapted to interconnect the midpoints between the two contact members of each branch.     • The present invention provides a circuit for isolating an AC actuated device and detecting its actuation via a digital controller which controls the actuation. The circuit comprises an optocoupler or other suitable means for isolating an AC actuated device, or load, from a DC microcontroller or PLC; a diode network allowing current flow in first and second directions and for biassing the light emitter of the optocoupler; actuation switch between the device and the diode network which is controlled by the PLC and; resistorcapacitor (RC) charge and discharge paths connected between the phototransistor output of the optocoupler and the PLC to vary the state of of an indication output connection which the PLC can sense to determine that the device is actuated. The invention may further comprise suitable biassing and limiting resistors, connection points, DC power supplies and the like as necessary or desirable.

    • A switch status sensor (1) is provided for counting on/off events of a switch (3) of a water meter (5). When an on/off event is detected by microcontroller (11), the microcontroller (11) supplies a "signature" signal, which is distinguishable from electromagnetic noise to the switch (3). If this "signature" signal is detected as having passed through the switch (3) by the microcontroller (11), then it can be confirmed that the switch (3) is closed. Alternatively, if the "signature" signal is not detected as having passed through the switch (3) by the microcontroller (11), then it is verified that the switch (3) is open. Thus, the switch status sensor (1) can distinguish between false switch events caused by electromagnetic noise and true on/off events of the switch.
