    • A security tag that includes two different types of item-securing mechanisms within a single apparatus. The apparatus includes a first arm portion and a second arm portion forming a product clamping region, the product clamping region having a clamp to removably affix the tag to a product, and a third arm portion and a fourth arm portion forming a product piercing region, the product piecing region coupled to the product clamping region. The product piercing region includes a product piercing element to removably affix the tag to the product. Bringing together the arm portions of the product piercing region causes the arm portions of the clamping region to join together, thereby trapping a piece of a product therebetween. The piercing element of the product piercing region is retained by a latch which assists in keeping the arm portions of the clamping region together, thus retaining the product securely within the clamping region.

    • A tamper-proof seal (10, 300) is disclosed for use in connection with sterilization containers. The seal includes a body portion (12, 312) including a sterilization indicating material (16) and a tongue (14, 314) extending from the body portion. The tongue may be in the form of a laminate consisting of a pair of substantially inert outer layers (20, 22, 320, 322) sandwiching a high shrink inner layer (24, 324). The tongue is designed to engage the latch mechanism (106) of a sterilization container (100) when the container is in the closed position and the latch mechanism is in a latched position. Upon exposure of the container to sterilization conditions, the tongue shrinks, causing the outer layers to fold upon themselves to form at least one pleat (200, 390, 392). The container latch mechanism cannot be opened without fracturing the tongue of the seal, thereby providing visible evidence of the latch mechanism being opened.

    • A molded thermoplastic body (14) is formed with a rectangular cavity (18). A molded thermoplastic insert (16) is welded to the body (14) in the cavity (16) and has a top cross member, a stem (50) member and a bottom member. The stem member (50) has a plurality of molded fingers (56, 58, 78, 80) cantilevered on opposing sides inclined relative to the stem member longitudinal axis in one embodiment. The stem member (50) forms the cavity into two channels. A wire shackle which may be round or square in section, a wire or molded plastic, is U-shaped with two legs (26, 28). One leg (26) is formed with notches (36, 38) to receive the tips of the fingers (56, 58) in one channel and the other leg (28) is formed with a reversibly bent barb (46) which engages the fingers (78, 80) in the other channel on the opposite side of the cavity. The bottom member limits the insertion depth of the legs. The notches (36, 38) and barb (46) engage the fingers (56, 58, 78, 80) and lock the shackle (12) to the body. When the shackle (12) is severed, and the notched leg (26) rotated to disengage the notches in the leg from the fingers to remove the leg from the body, the other leg (28) with the barb (46) can not be rotated and readily removed to thereby provide evidence of tampering. Other embodiments are disclosed including providing the notched leg with squared sides and an entrance opening into the corresponding channel that is square to preclude rotation of the notched leg and shackles of different configurations.
