    • A lightweight blowout preventer having a low profile is disclosed. Each of the rams (24) have a sealing ring to be positioned thereabout to seal leaks from occurring between its bonnet (96) and the ram body (21), thereby permitting the use of only about four connecting bolts (14a) for each side of the bonnet to the body (21) and torqued for ordinary holding. A hinge plate (50) is provided to allow selection of the side of the body (21) for two associated bonnets (96). The hinge plate (50) also is a manifold for the passageways for the hydraulic fluid to the fluid hinges. The hinges (50) each includes a telescopic balancing sub (90, 92) with only one side spring (94) for applying balanced pressure with the applied closing or opening hydraulic fluid to the hinge (50) regardless of whether opening or closing hydraulic pressure is applied. The hydraulic passageways (100a, 100b, 102a, 102b) in the bonnets are located between the guideway extensions (105) and the outside surface of the bonnets (96). The hinge plate (50) and the bonnets (96) can be inverted so that they can be mounted on either of two sides of the body (21).
