    • A composite tube (10) for use in such applications as an automobile heater hose has inner and outer tubes (11, 15). The inner tube (11) has a corrugated central section (12) and cylindrical end portions (14). The outer tube (11) is bonded to the end portions of the inner tube and to the crests of the corrugations. The composite tube (10) has spaced identical end couplings (22), each with a portion extending into and bonded to the associated inner tube (11) end portion, an end part (26) overlying and bonded to ends of the tube portions and an external flange (25) surrounding and bonded to the reinforcing tube end portion. The couplings include circumferentially spaced end reliefs (30) for facilitating connection of the coupling to a tube such as a fluid inlet to or outlet from an associated automobile radiator or the like. The composite tube (10) is continuously formed in a known manner while the end couplings are molded with a novel and improved mold and process.

    • The die assembly is disclosed for forming a bead on a cylindrical tube. The assembly includes a holder (24) which secures the tube (10) against axial movement so that a portion of the tube protrudes outwardly from the holder (24) along a predetermined axis and in which the holder has a forming surface (30) circumscribing the tube. The die assembly further includes a first die part (36) having a cylindrical mandrel (40) aligned with and slidably receivable into the outwardly protruding portion of the tube. A tubular cylindrical sleeve is mounted to the first die part (36) so that the sleeve is coaxial with the mandrel (40) and so that the tube extends between the mandrel (40) and the sleeve. The sleeve also includes a conical surface coaxially formed about a free end of the sleeve. A second die part (60) has a throughbore complementary in size and shape to the outer periphery of the sleeve so that the sleeve is slidably receivable within the throughbore.

    • An apparatus for flanging tubular articles of a thermoplastic polymer which has been drawn and heat-set to an elevated temperature comprises a heating die (20) shaped to receive an end of one of the tubular articles (10) and to restrain it from shrinkage, transfer means such as a star wheel (24) to transfer the article (10) from the heating die (20) to a forming die (22) shaped to form an outward flange (12) on said end. Heater coils (33, 40) are provided to maintain the dies at the required temperatures; namely the heating die (20) at a softening temperature above the glass transition temperature of the polymer but below the elevated temperature to which it has been heat-set and the forming die (22) at a forming temperature below the softening temperature. Means, such as a pneumatic system (48, 50, 52) are provided to apply an end of one of the tubular articles (10) to the heating die (20) so that this end is softened whilst restrained from residual shrinkage by the heating die (20) and also for forcing the forming die (22) and the heat-softened end of the tubular article (10) together to form the outward flange (12). Once the flange (12) has been formed, it is cooled e.g. by cooling air whilst restrained against deformation by the forming die (22) to set the flange in accordance with well-defined dimensions. A method for flanging tubular articles is also disclosed.
