    • A copper pipe (1) has a circumferential groove (2) formed in an outer wall to receive an O-ring seal (3). The groove (2) is formed a pre-set distance from a free end (5) of the pipe (1). Two pipe lengths are jointed together by a coupling (10) having a housing (11) with pipe seal-receiving seats (15) at each end for receiving the O-ring seal (3) fitted to the pipe (1). Caps (14) screw threadingly engage the housing (11) to clamp the pipe lengths (1) in the housing (11). The fitting can be pre-assembled and used as a push-in fitting with a subsequent tightening by hand.

    • A fluid-tight coupling (2) for connecting opposite ends of the pipe section (4, 6) to provide a fluid-tight seal is described. The fluid-tight seal between the upper and lower tubular sections is provided by an upper and a lower metal-to-metal seal produced respectively between a lower sealing surface (10) of the upper pipe section (4) and an upper sealing surface (12) of an annular interface member (8) and an upper sealing surface (14) of the lower section (6) and a lower sealing surface (16) of the annular interface member (8). The metal-to-metal seals are produced and maintained by a collar (20) arranged coaxially about the coupling region of the tubular sections. The collar (20) is coupled by threads (24, 26) to the upper and lower pipe sections and rotation of the collar (20) in one direction brings the sections (4, 6) together comprising the interface member (8) and deforming at least one sealing surface of each pair of sealing surfaces (10, 12) and (14, 16) to increase the contact area and provide metal-to-metal seals. Embodiments and applications of the invention are described.

    • A releasable coupling (1) which can grip and retain an object such as a pipe (2) inserted in the hollow body (3) of the coupling, with the gripping effect being releasable such that the object can be removed from the body. A sleeve (6) is movable axially within the body (3) and carries in a plurality of holes (7) around its circumference a number of rollers (9) which are adapted to grip the surface of the pipe (2). As the pipe is inserted the rollers (9) are able to move away from the pipe surface in the body (3) to allow it to enter, but as it is withdrawn, the rollers (9) are entrained and thus brought into contact with the cam surface (5) which forces them towards the pipe axis, thereby gripping the pipe. The gripping effect is released by pushing the sleeve (6) into the body (3) to disengage the rollers (9) from the cam surface (5) thereby permitting removal of the pipe (2). An O-ring seal (14) can be included to provide a fluid-tight seal, if desired.
