    • Decoding encoded transform coefficients of a current block includes initializing a decoder state of a state machine having Boolean and symbol ANS decoders. The decoder state includes an ANS state and a buffer position within a buffer storing a variable string including the encoded transform coefficients. The transform coefficients are sequentially produced from the variable string using the state machine by processing a binary flag/bit using the Boolean ANS decoder and processing a token using the symbol ANS decoder. Each decoder performs state normalization when the ANS state is outside a valid state range, performs output computation to generate an output value for the binary flag/bit or token using the ANS state, and updates the ANS state using the output value and the probability as inputs. The decoder state evolution operations may be different. An encoder state machine having Boolean and symbol ANS encoders is also described.

    • A system is provided for creating level parameter updating codewords for transform coefficients used for relating transform units (TUs) that divide up coding units (CUs) in a High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) system. The system provides binarization of the codewords and removes unnecessary operations to reduce system complexity and increase compression performance. The system generates transform coefficients that relate the TUs and begins by providing a parameter variable (cRiceParam) set to an initial value of zero. The parameter variable is then converted into a binary codeword based on the current value of the parameter variable and the value of a symbol and then updated with a new current value after each symbol has been converted. Updating can be provided with reference to table values or the values can be provided from combination logic.

    • The present invention provides a method for decoding corrupt codestreams for encoded digital imagery and video and, in particular, JPEG2000 codestreams with improved error resilience properties. The decoding techniques apply to a class of coding algorithms in which the data from underlying images are partitioned, typically to allow decoding of different spatial sections of the image, and the rules governing the dependencies within and perhaps between partitioned sets are known. Corrupt codestreams are decoded with improved image quality by observing the partitions imposed by the underlying algorithm (200), detecting an error in a partition set (202), analyzing the dependencies within and perhaps between the partitions (204), determining what sections of encoded data that follow the error in the partition set can be salvaged (206), and decoding those sections (208). Even though there might be errors in a particular partition, portions of that partition might still be completely or partially decodable, depending on certain modes or "switches" used during the creation of the codestream.
