    • An image transfer object is disclosed that provides the necessary mechanism to conduct a dynamic transfer operation. The image transfer object includes a static reference to dynamic data. The image data is "dynamic", in that the user may request additional views of the image. An image recipient computer receives the static reference to identify a source image on a server, and generates a first request, based on the static reference, for a view of the source image to the server. In response, the server transmits data to the image recipient computer. The image recipient computer displays the first view of the source image for viewing by the user. The user may then select a different portion of the source image, and/or a different resolution to designate a second view of the source image. The image recipient computer generates a second request to the image server for the second view, and the image server transmits additional data to generate the second view of the source image. Thereafter, the second view of the source image is displayed at the image recipient computer. A sender of the image may transmit a context for the image via e-mail or the recipient computer may download the image from a Web site. Techniques to configure the dynamic transfer object are also disclosed.

    • A method and system (101) for presenting in real-time a conference data set having document data, video data, and audio data, to a remote computing system of a remotely located conference participant (112-115). The system receives configuration data for the remote computing system and uses the received configuration data to select a conference data set format suitable for transmission to the remote computing system. The system encodes (103) the conference data set in the selected conference data set format and selects appropriate transmission web page for the encoded conference data set using the received configuration data. The system (101) then transmits the encoded conference data set from the selected transmission web page over a public network to the remote computing system, wherein the remotely located conference participant (112-115) accesses the encoded conference data set using a web browser. The system (101) also transmits to the remote computing system any software required for accessing the encoded conference data set, wherein the software has been selected according to the received configuration data. The system also includes a capability for receiving chat data from the remote computing system.

    • A method of transmitting an image from a remote server to a portable device and dynamically viewing, by a human observer, the transmitted image on a display of the portable device. On a remote server, a master set of data representative of a graphic image (30) is processed to form a first subset of data representative of a portion of the graphic image. The data is transmitted to the portable device (49) and drawn on the display (34). The user selects a portion of the image to be further expanded and the master database is again processed to form a second subset of data representative of the selected portion of the image. The second subset of data is transmitted to the portable device and drawn (36) on the display.

    • Fax machines could carry out considerably more demanding tasks than those they carry out today. They use the medium with which people are most familiar: paper. The invention calls for forms containing information in standard print to be "faxed" to a receiver CPU where the fax is converted into code using an OCR programme. While the converted dat in the CPU trigger the required operations, a telecommunications-level control command switches the fax machine round from the original "call" mode to the "receive" mode so that is can receive the result of the data processing carried out by the CPU. Alternatively, this can be done, for security reasons for instance, by a separate phone call back from CPU. Any fax machine anywhere in the world can therefore be upgraded to function in a way similar to a PC linked up to the telephone network, without any modifications having to be made to the fax machine itself. The use of the standard fax protocoll means that the communications problems experienced when establishing a connection in other ways disappear. The resulting equipment is not just a fax-based communications platform like those in use today, but is, in addition, a data-processing platform with the same multipurpose characteristics, but also tailored to simpler input peripheral devices than screen and keyboard.

    • A new display system and method is described, utilizing a cellular telephone having digital camera capability and a television linked directly over a UWB wireless signal forming a UWB wireless video pico-net. The system utilizes a digital camera unit to capture picture or video images for UWB transmission directly to the television acting as a pico-net host controller, either independently or together with the cellular telephone operating as a pico-net child. The display system comprises and one or more remote devices and a host display communicating on a UWB wireless network. The host display comprises a display for presentation of the picture or video images and a UWB transceiver for processing image data from the picture or video images, for selectively sending and receiving the image data based on a request from the child. The one or more remote devices comprise a digital camera for capturing the picture or video images and another UWB transceiver as used in the host display. The host display has a generally larger display for improved presentation of the captured picture or video images useful and amusing for group, party, wedding, and conference viewing, or simply for enhanced personal enjoyment. For picture or video image sharing, the system further facilitates downloading the current picture or video images from the host display television to a requesting cellular telephone or digital camera equipped with the UWB transceiver. The UWB display system provides sufficient bandwidth to support numerous such download requests simultaneously, while utilizing a transmission technology having minimal power consumption.
