摘要： An apparatus and method for image scanning of variable sized documents having variable orientations are disclosed. A bit map image of a document is aligned based on a rotational indicator from a data set representative of the bit map image, and a document type is determined based on a document type indicator from the data set. A document can include up to 16 data areas each of which may include mark-sense data (52), image data (54), character data (55), and bar code data (56), depending on the document type. Data is extracted from the aligned bit map image data based on a predefined document mask associated with the document type. The apparatus includes a scanner (100) having a thermal doucment brand head (108) for printing information onto a document, and a host processor (132) coupled to the scanner. The scanner calibrates its photosensor elements (110) by scanning a calibration plaque having a known reflectivity, and determining a calibration intensity value for each element.

摘要： The present invention relates in general to optical scanning and image processing, and relates more particularly to a document imaging system which detects skew and/or detects size/shape of a document image. Preferred embodiments utilize a background with optical characteristics which contrast with those of the scanned document. In one embodiment, a document imaging system generates scanning signals in response to optical characteristics of a medium such as a sheet of paper, detects transitions in the scanning signal which define points along one or more edges of the medium, establishes a skew angle between the detected edges and a reference orientation, and compensates for skew by modifying the scanning signals as required such that the resultant skew angle is substantially equal to zero. In another embodiment, a document imaging system detects one or more edges of a document, defines a polygon having sides substantially congruent with the detected edges, and establishes the size of the document in response to the polygon.

摘要： Apparatus is disclosed having document recognition capability for determining the size and location of an original document (10) on a scanner platen (14) before the document is scanned for image capture, and which effects both document recognition and image capture within a single scan cycle. A platen (14) is optically scanned in forward and reverse intrack directions (16, 18), and an electrical information signal characteristic of the optical densities scanned is created. Document recognition is responsive to the electrical information signal produced during the forward direction scan for detecting the boundaries of an original document on the platen. Image capture is responsive to the electrical information signal produced during the reverse direction scan for producing a record of the image on the original document. Magnification is provided for changing the size of the recorded image from that of the image on the original document in part by adjusting the speed of the reverse intrack scan, and is automatically adjustable in accordance with the size of the recording sheet.
