    • A method of operating a workstation includes capturing multiple monitoring images each being captured with the imaging sensor while the illumination light source is energized during one of multiple short exposure-time-periods, and detecting a checkup-condition that includes analyzing the multiple monitoring images to determine the presence of any adverse feature on workstation's window. Each of the multiple short exposure-time-periods is shorter than four times of a threshold exposure-time-period but no shorter than 25% of the threshold exposure-time-period. The threshold exposure-time-period is a minimal exposure-time-period needed for the imaging sensor to capture recognizable patterns of a barcode that is in directing contacting with the window while the illumination light source is energized.

    • The present invention relates to a method for managing a plurality of image processing devices, comprising the steps of: an image processing device sending a status update to a monitoring device, the monitoring device collecting status updates received from image processing devices; in response to a predetermined event generating a work list based on the collected status updates; sending the work list to a mobile device; and communicating the work list on the mobile device. In a specific embodiment generating the work list comprises: including from a predefined list of image processing devices, image processing devices for which a status has been received that signifies that the device requires attendance, either immediately or in the near future. In a more specific embodiment, it is determined that an image processing device requires attendance by comparing the status updates received from the image processing device to a predefined list of statuses for which it is known that the status signifies that attendance is required or not.

    • A system, apparatus and method for testing the functional components of an electronic digital imaging system is described. The system includes apparatus for image acquisition, storage, display, communication and printing. The system relies on a closed loop analysis to test system components by measuring a set of statistical image quality metrics. The expected set of statistics are in the form of special purpose features stored as a data set representative of an expected reference object. The closed loop analysis measures, for example, the quality of the printing component of the system by ouputting a copy of the expected reference image, using the acquisition component to input the copy of the excepted reference image, and then comparing the statistics against threshold values representative of an ideally operating component. The comparison of statistics against the threshold values provides a go/no-go measure of component performance and can indicate sources of system degradation. The image quality metrics is known as a metrics set which contains a comprehensive set of tests regarding primary modes of image quality degradation: pixel value integrity, pixel location integrity (geometric distortion) and spatial resolution. The metrics set allows for the automatic execution of a large number of image quality measurements and a reduction of the resulting test data to a manageable result so that a simple go/no-go result may be given to the system operator. In addition, the metrics set is useable in indicating and locating system faults based upon the analysis data for field service personnel.

    • A facsimile order entry device (10) and system for sending orders via telephone lines. The device (10) comprises an optical scanner (11), a paper drive mechanism (21) and electronics (23, 24, 56) which are all contained within a housing (27) with one button (22) for operation. The electronics are connected to an external power source and a telephone line (15). The device (10) is not capable of receiving documents. A slot (30) in the housing (27) permits a user to insert a prepared order, the presence of which is sensed by a detector (26) and then automatically grasped by the paper drive mechanism (21) and passed by the optical scanner (11) which, in conjunction with the electronics, reads and transmits a graphic image of the order to a predetermined receiving station. The device (10) also includes a marker assembly (19) for marking the order when the transmission is confirmed to have been successful and an indicator assembly (35) for indicating the status of the transmission of the order.
