    • A data traffic network element for a line switched ring network. The network has a data ingress point for receiving ingress payload data having multiple working connections transported in respective timeslots, at least one of the connections being passed through the network element. The network also has a data egress point for releasing egress payload data in the ring network including the connection. The traffic network element includes a timeslot interchange entity for interchanging the connection to a timeslot in the egress payload data different from the timeslot of the connection in the ingress payload data, wherein data over the connection is transported to and from said network element in different timeslots. One advantage of the network element with the timeslot interchange is the ability to provide a better bandwidth utilization by allowing to set connections over otherwise stranded bandwidth. In a specific example of implementation, the ring network is a BLSR ring network that uses the SONET protocol for data transmission. The timeslot interchange entity has the ability to store information identifying currently implemented timeslot interchanges. This information is available for access by protection switching logic during protection switching operations.

    • Methods and apparatus for the hardware implementation of virtual concatenation and link capacity adjustment over SONET/SDH frames include providing a state machine on chip with a SONET/SDH mapper and providing means whereby a plurality of members of a VCG can share the same state machine. The apparatus of the invention preferably includes a time wheel for granting access to the single state machine and memory for storing state information for each of the VCG members. According to the presently preferred embodiment, the invention is implemented on chip with an OC-3 Ethernet mapper. Up to eighty-four VCG members share the same state machine and memory is provided on the chip for maintaining the state information for eighty-four VCG members. Fifteen bits are used to store the state information for each VCG member in low order and seventeen bits are used to store the state information for each VCG member in high order.

    • A system for partitioning SONET frames into logical channels in a SONET ring is described. A SONET frame comprising a number of STS frames is subdivided into a plurality of logical channels. Each logical channel includes one or more STS frames. A protection layer is assigned to each logical channel. The protection layer may correspond to protection provided by the SONET ring or protection provided by network elements and specific to the type of data traffic transmitted within each channel. If SONET level protection for a particular logical channel is disabled, the bandwidth for the STS frames comprising that channel may be allocated among two or more nodes in the SONET ring.
