    • The invention relates to a new family of differential oscillators based on oscillator amplifiers with local feedback forming respective local feedback systems, and at least one common link interconnecting the local feedback systems. Each branch of the differential oscillator includes an oscillator amplifier with a phase shifting and impedance transforming local feedback path from the output to the input of the amplifier to form a local feedback system. The differential oscillator also includes one or more common phase shifting links for interconnecting and cooperating with the local feedback systems to enable self-sustained differential oscillation. In differential mode operation, the electrical midpoint of the common phase shifting link(s) is virtually grounded and the local feedback systems of the two branches operate, together with the common phase shifting link(s), effectively in anti-phase with respect to each other as two separate oscillators.

    • Recent trends have seen the desire for lower and lower supply voltages in radio frequency (RF) components as this leads to lower power consumption and, therefore, longer battery life. As well, lower voltages and less current means that mobile products can be made to require fewer battery cells leading to lighter, more compact devices. The present invention discloses a novel topology for providing a low-voltage voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The novel topology is based on the negative transconductance oscillator. However, the novel topology of the invention eliminates transistor "stacking" in the oscillator circuit, thereby allowing the oscillator circuit to be operated at a supply voltage only slightly higher than the turn-on voltage for a single transistor.

    • A relaxation oscillator, such as a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), with automatic swing control feedback which dynamically monitors the voltage swing across a capacitor and adjusts the oscillator threshold voltage, at which reversal of the polarity of the charging/discharging current occurs, to maintain the effective voltage swing at a constant level. The improved relaxation oscillator provides a very wide linear range of frequency variation versus control voltage (or current) and allows for the extendibility of linear operation to or near the maximum frequency that can be practically achieved by the oscillator circuitry.
