    • A system, method and apparatus for controlling consumer electronic (CE) devices. A control unit obtains CE device command codes and "metadata" from an interactive, wirelessly accessible database. The control unit uses the metadata, which is data relating to the unique control behaviors of a CE device, to translate between a universal control command and one or more of the command codes associated with the CE device. A wireless access method is used to download the CE device metadata and command codes to a central server or to the control unit itself. The control unit provides an interface by which end users can provide feedback concerning downloaded metadata and command codes, such that erroneous data may be corrected or so that other users may determine whether the data is worth accessing.

    • A remote controller easy to manipulate and a device to be controlled by the remote controller are provided. The remote controller includes: a switching means for selecting one of a plurality of options in one dimension out of control items laid out in a plurality of dimensions, an item selecting means for selecting one of a plurality of options in another dimension out of the control items laid out in the plurality of dimensions. The remote controller transmits a remote control code in accordance with an output of the switching means and n output of the item selecting means. The device to be controlled by the remote controller is provided with a displaying means for showing the control items in accordance with a signal from the remote controller. Every time the first remote control code is transmitted, the displaying means displays control items selectable by the item selecting means for a certain period of time.

    • A method and arrangement for installing or updating a large number of television receivers in e.g. hotels is disclosed. One of the receivers (1) is manually programmed. The data is then downloaded from said receiver into a remote control unit (3) by modulating the conventional status LED (17) of the receiver. In accordance with the invention, the status LED is of a type which emits visible light (171) as well as infrared light (172). The modulated infrared light beam (172) is detected by an infrared detector (34) of the remote control device and stored (35) therein. The data stored in the remote control unit is subsequently uploaded to other receivers using the conventional infrared channel (33, 15).
