    • Methods and apparatus are described herein that make use of complex tuning, the inherently repetitive nature of sampled signals, and programmable digital filtering to create a flexible digital up-conversion system that utilizes a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with a fixed effective sample rate while still being adapted for tunability over a wide frequency range. With a knowledge of the fixed effective sample rate of the DAC and a desired frequency of up-conversion and combining complex tuning at baseband and up-sampling by a factor of N with a programmable passband filter configured to select one of a plurality of signal images resulting from the up-sampling, it is possible to translate a baseband input signal to a wide range of frequencies above or below Fs, without changing the sampling rate of the fixed rate DAC used in the up-conversion process.

    • We describe RFID tags that incorporate a nonlinear resonator that self-adapts to the driving frequency of a reader. More particularly we describe an RF tag for sending data to a tag reader by modulating energy drawn from an RF field of said tag reader, the tag comprising: an antenna; a resonant circuit coupled to said antenna to resonate at a frequency of said RF field; a local power store to store power extracted from said RF field; a modulation system to modulate one or both of the resonance amplitude and a relative phase of a signal in said resonant circuitwithrespect to said RF field; and a feedback circuit coupled to said resonant circuit and to said local power store to control one or both of said resonance amplitude and said relative phase to control transients in said resonance amplitude caused by said modulation.

    • A quadra-polar modulator that is simple to implement and also provides good noise performance. The quadra-polar modulator includes four amplitude modulators and a combiner. Each amplitude modulator modulates a respective carrier signal with a respective input signal to provide a respective output signal. The combiner then combines the four output signals from the four amplitude modulators to provide a modulated signal. Each amplitude modulator may be implemented with a switching amplifier, such as a supply modulated class E amplifier. Two input signals are obtained by summing separately an inphase (I) modulating signal and an inverted I modulating signal with an offset value. The other two input signals are obtained by summing separately a quadrature (Q) modulating signal and an inverted Q modulating signal with the offset value. The offset value can be selected based on the expected magnitude of the modulating signals. The four carrier signals are in quadrature to each other.
