    • An electrically conductive cable (100) includes a number of conductive strands (102, 104, 106) which are twined to form a wire rope (108) without a central core. The wire rope (108) is drawn through a die (110) to reduce its diameter until the outer surface of the cable (100) is smooth and the cross section of the cable (100) is substantially circular. According to a presently preferred embodiment, the electrically conductive cable (100) is successively drawn through four dies (110) of decreasing diameter so that the overall diameter of the wire rope (108) is reduced by 30-40 %. The resulting electrically conductive cable (100) has the tensile strength advantage and the low resistance advantage of a solid conductor with the flexibility advantage of a wire rope cable. In addition, the smooth outer surface of the electrically conductive cable (100) according to the invention is easily insulated with an extruded material.

    • A coaxial cable (400) includes an inner conductor (402) made of a number of conductive strands (412, 414, 416) which are twined to form a wire rope which is drawn through a die to reduce its diameter until the outer surface of the inner conductor is substantially smooth and the cross-section of the inner conductor is substantially circular, an outer conductor (406) concentrically around the inner conductor, and a dielectric (404) between the inner and outer conductors. The strands of the inner conductor may be a single metal or alloy wire, or may be plated wires. The outer conductors may be highly flexible metallized tape which is helically wrapped around the dielectric. As such, the coaxial cable has substantially greater flexibility. According to a second embodiment, a coaxial cable includes inner and outer conductors, and a dielectric therebetween. The dielectric includes an outer cross-sectional shape which is preferably different from the cross-section shape of the outer conductor. As a result of the different cross-sectional shapes, channels (410) are formed between the dielectric and the outer conductor to facilitate cooling of the cable. According to a preferred aspect of the second embodiment, a cooling fluid is circulated throughout the channels to remove heat. The cooled coaxial cable provides a signal transmission medium with reduced high frequency signal attenuation.

    • A miniature controlled-impedance transmission line (1) consists of a flexible cable having side-by-side conductors (10 and 12) for transmitting high frequency signals. The cable is preferably in the form of a pair of conductors, each surrounded by respective inner and outer dielectric layers (14, 16, 18 and 20) of different compositions. The inner and outer dielectric layers are applied to each conductor independently of the other conductor, after which the respective outer dielectric layers (18 and 20) of the two conductors are bounded together in side-by-side relationship without altering the inner dielectric layers (14 and 16). The result is a conductor pair (2) having minimum cross-section for high-density applications and uniform capacitance which is also stable in that it will not change with subsequent bending or handling. Preferably, the conductors, with their inner and outer dielectrics, are helically twisted together prior to bonding so that the bonding forms a permanently twisted pair having not only uniform and stable capacitance but also uniform and stable lay length with resultant uniform electrical delay characteristics of both conductors.
