    • A method of interactive electronic publishing permitting instantaneous conversion of all kinds of text to speech, and of musical score to music, and the creation of the instantaneous effect of animation, all by the operations of a mouse or other interactive device. No autonomous plug-in applications are required.The sounds and images concerned are pre-recorded and edited to minimize file sizes, and pre-loaded before being played in response to mouse actions. In the case of images, the animation effect is achieved by using existing swap-image techniques but using pre-filmed and edited images created for animation purposes. In the case of sounds, existing mouse-over techniques are used but with sounds which make audible the text or animation concerned.In the preferred embodiment of the invention, sounds and images are incorporated into a button and published as a movie with sounds in mp3 format.

    • A digital recording device (110) is portable and battery powered,, designed particularly for operation with a guitar (115) and other stringed musical instruments (115a) whether fitted with magnetic pick-ups or not. The device (110) is sufficiently small and light weight to be carried by the musical instrument's jack socket (105) while being used. When not in use, the device is small enough to be considered "pocket sized". The device uses a novel microphone (915) technique to receive and digitise acoustic signals produced by a musical instrument, or other source of analogue data, and store it numerically, for subsequent transfer in digital file format via a wireless connection (1055) and/or a Universal Serial Bus port. The device (110) offers a means of digitally recording music directly at the instrument, for subsequent playback or transfer to another device or piece of equipment.

    • A system for recording and mixing sound that can concurrently process a plurality of audio input files. The device is based upon a Cyrix class CPU microprocessor mounted on a motherboard with at least about 32 MB of RAM. Two or more logical data reservoirs, each having a storage capacity of at least about 450 MB, are connected to the microprocessor by a conventional system bus. The system is configured so that none of the data files, i.e., the MIDI and the *.WAV files, are stored on the first data reservoir, and that all of the MIDI and *.WAV files, but no other files, are stored on the second data reservoir. Conventional sound and video hardware is also connected to the system via a conventional bus as is a conventional mastering unit. The recording device requires a software operating system effective to support the processing of the audio data files and a conventional audio processing software capable of utilizing both MIDI and *.WAV files (or the equivalent of these files) configured to have a DMA value of at least about 25,000.
