摘要： The present disclosure concerns a photonic integrated circuit (10) and a method for interrogating a ring resonator (3) comprised therein. The circuit (10) comprises an optical port (4) for coupling light (L) into and out of the circuit (10). The circuit (10) further comprises a first waveguide (1) for receiving light (L1) from the optical port (4), and a second waveguide (2) for sending back light to the optical port (4). The ring resonator (3) is arranged between the first waveguide (1) and the second waveguide (2) for coupling a resonant wavelength (λ) of the light therein between. The optical port (4) comprises a polarization splitting coupler for coupling light of a first polarization (P1) to and from the first waveguide (1) and coupling light of a second polarization (P2), orthogonal to the first polarization (P1), to and from the second waveguide (2).

摘要： Light is coupled into two polarization modes of a waveguide (S1), e.g., an optical fiber. The spectral response of Rayleigh backscatter in the waveguide segment for the two polarization modes is measured (S2), e.g., using OFDR, OTDR, OLCR, etc. The autocorrelation of the spectral response is calculated (S3). The spectral (wavelength) shift from a main autocorrelation peak to a side autocorrelation peak, corresponding to one of the two polarization modes of the waveguide segment, is determined (S4). The spectral shift, corresponding to a beat length of the waveguide segment, is multiplied by an average index of refraction to determine a birefringence of the waveguide segment (S5).

The optical source is configured to generate an optical interrogation signal that is transmitted into an optical fiber (24). The beat detection module is configured to receive from the optical fiber an optical backscattering signal in response to the optical interrogation signal, and to mix the optical backscattering signal with a reference replica of the optical interrogation signal using In-phase/Quadrature (I/Q) mixing, so as to produce a complex beat signal having In-phase (I) and Quadrature (Q) components. The processor is configured to sense one or more events affecting the optical fiber by analyzing the I and Q components of the complex beat signal.

The method comprises launching optical pulses into at least one polarisation eigenmode of a polarisation maintaining fibre as the sensor optical fibre, detecting temporal speckle patterns of light backscattered from the at least one polarisation eigenmode of the fibre, comparing the temporal speckle patterns to determine the location and direction information of a disturbance in the environment of the sensor optical fibre. The location information may be a distance along the fibre, and the direction information may be a direction radially from the axis of the fibre. The apparatus or instrument may be used to detect disturbance over long distances such as pipes, pipelines, or wells. Other applications include detecting intruders entering a controlled area.
