    • The invention relates to a controlling device (7) for modifying the inner flow cross-section of a line through which a gas stream (8) flows. The controlling device comprises a control element for modifying the flow cross-section according to the flow rate, and comprises a resetting means (71), which exerts a force onto the control element, whereby enlarging the flow cross-section. The control element and the resetting means (71) interact in the control area of the controlling device in such a manner that an increase in the flow rate in the vicinity of the control element effects a reduction of the flow cross-section, and a decrease in the flow rate in the vicinity of the control element effects an enlargement of the flow cross-section. The control element is mounted such that it can rotate around an axis extending in the direction of flow, whereby a rotation of the control element effects a change to the inner flow cross-section.

    • A method of thermally cycling an object is provided which comprises alternately contacting the object with vapor from first and second liquid/vapor two-phase mixtures of a working fluid wherein the first mixture is at a higher temperature and pressure than the second mixture. An apparatus is also described which comprises a thermal chamber, a first reservoir comprising the first two-phase mixture, a second reservoir comprising the second two-phase mixture and conduits connecting the first reservoir and second reservoirs to the thermal chamber. The apparatus can be used to thermally cycle an object placed in the thermal chamber. An apparatus is also described which comprises a conduit connecting the vapor regions of the first and second reservoirs. The apparatus can be used to thermally cycle an object placed in the vapor region of the first reservoir. The object can comprise one or more layers of an electrically or magnetically polarizable material.
