    • A solid fuel heating apparatus has combination air supplied in a controlled manner by a manifold (130). The manifold has a first branch (132) that directs combustion air to the interior of the fuel ignited within the firebox (12) and a second branch (138) that extends along the forward edge of a baffle (172) that extends from the rear wall (24) of the firebox across a flue (20). Air issuing from the second branch is directed towards the fuel within the firebox (12) so that a bodily rotation of gases within the firebox is obtained. A third branch (142) extending generally parallel to the second branch (138) and directs air toward the first branch (132). The air delivered by the second and third branch is roughly twice that delivered by the first branch and it has been found that this provides complete combustion of the fuel within the stove. In a second embodiment, combustion products are recirculated into the combustion zone through orifices (202) in a rear wall (200) of the combustion chamber that is spaced from the rear wall of the stove (24) and depends from the baffle (172). Combustion products passing the orifices draw the recirculated by-products into the combustion zone.

    • A free-standing unit (10) for heating air in a U-shaped channel (18, 20, 22) surrounding a fire box (12, 78, 80, 82, 84) having a pair of spaced vertical vents (30, 32) for directing the heated forced air to converge in front of the fire box opening (34) to limit air flow towards said openings. Mesh (31) in the vertical vents (34) directs the forced air downward to be combined with the hot forced air from a bottom horizontal vent (88). A baffle plate (126) depending from the top of the fire-box adjacent the flue port (26) and an opening along the top of the doors ignite the gases adjacent the top and direct some gases back into the fire. By forcing heated air at a low level and drawing cool air from a high level, the air being heated is of a uniform temperature. A hood (66) extending along the top edge of the fire box opening diverts exiting gases back into the fire box. A thermostatically controlled blower (71) creates the forced air and cools the fire box walls.

    • A self-powered fan for circulating air for use in cooperation with a heat source, such as a wood stove, and having a first heat transfer member thermally and physically connected with the heat source. The fan blades operably create a first or warm air flow and a second or cooler air flow. The fan has a second heat transfer member with a thermocouple module structure located between the two heat transfer members. The first heat transfer member is of suitable material, size, mass and shape as to provide a suitable temperature gradient between the thermocouple structure and the heat source to operably allow of such sufficient heat transfer from the first heat transfer member to the thermocouple to generate sufficient power to effect rotation of the blades, but not to cause thermal damage to the thermocouple structure. The fan blades are constructed and arranged to cause a portion of the second air flow to be drawn past the first heat transfer member to effect a cooling heat transfer effect upon the first heat transfer member. The improvement is wherein the motor located on the first transfer member adjacent a side of the thermocouple structure remote from the second transfer member does not hinder the second air flow, and is suitably located as to not be operably thermally damaged by the first heat transfer member or the heat source.

According to other embodiments, a firebox or combustion enclosure includes a plurality of airfoils formed on the inner and outer surfaces of the enclosure to facilitate heat exchange between exhaust gases flowing across the inner surface of the enclosure and air blown across the outer surface of the enclosure. According to some embodiments, the airfoils and enclosure are of integral unibody construction. According to yet other embodiments, a user sets parameters via a wall control unit, and a stove control unit receives the parameters and automatically controls fuel feed rate, ignition, convection blower, combustion blower, and/or firepot cleaning based on the one or more parameters.

    • Apparatus for capturing heat from a stove is disclosed. The apparatus comprises an enclosure (12) for surrounding a firebox (10) of a stove. An air duct (20) is connected to a convection space (18) within the enclosure and has an opening to a space surrounding the stove. An air-water heat exchanger (24) is within the air duct, the heat exchanger having an air side and a water side and being operative to transfer heat between air on the air side and water flowing in channels in the water side. An impeller (26) within the duct (20) that can operate to cause air to flow within the duct towards the opening. In a first mode of operation air is allowed to flow from the air duct to a space surrounding the stove at least partly by natural convection and in a second mode, the impeller induces air to flow from the convection space duct to the air side of the heat exchanger. The invention also provides stoves incorporating such apparatus.
