    • A wave energy converter (1) consisting of a pole (2) with a wave catching structure (9) connected to a base (7) through a ball or universal joint (6). The pole oscillates as the waves hit the different sides of the wave catching structure. The pole is biased towards the vertical position. The motion of the pole activates devices for absorption and extraction of energy such as piston cylinders (3) with one end attached to the pole and the other to the base (7) by ball or universal joints (4) and (5), which also restrict the motion of the pole along specific meridians by use of appropriate hydraulic components. The possibility of motion of the wave catching structure along the pole increases the absorption of wave energy. Being able to exploit waves from any direction and also to assume a floating form, it is suitable for both deep and shallow waters.

    • Apparatus (11) for harnessing wave energy in a body of water and for converting the harnessed energy to high pressure fluid. The apparatus (11) is installed for operation in a body of seawater (12) having a water surface (13) and a seabed (14). The apparatus (11) comprises three pumps (15) anchored within the body of water (12) and adapted to be activated by wave energy. The pumps (15) are attached to a base (17) anchored to the seabed (14). Each pump (15) is operably connected to a buoyant actuator (19) suspended within the body of seawater (12) between and above the pumps but below the water surface (13). Each pump (15) is activated by movement of the buoyant actuator (19) in response to wave motion. Thus, the apparatus (11) translates wave motion into a reciprocating pump action. Each pump (15) is operatively connected to the buoyant actuator (19) by a coupling (21) comprising a tether (23). The base (17) typically comprises a generally triangular structure (31) having three sides (33) interconnected at corners (35), with one of the three pumps (15) connected to each corner (35) of the triangular base. The buoyant actuator (19) is positioned above, and is centrally located with respect to, the three pumps (15).

    • There is provided an apparatus for absorbing or converting energy from a moving body of water. The apparatus comprises an energy capture element (3) which, in use, moves in response to movement of the body of water in which the energy capture element (3) is placed, and an elongate guide element (1) defining a guide path along which the energy capture element (3) can move. The energy capture element (3) is a volume. In use, the energy capture element (3) and the guide element (1) are arranged so that the energy capture element (3) moves along the guide path in a substantially horizontal plane in response to differences in water pressure along a length of the energy capture element (3) parallel to the guide path and in response to movement of the body of water surrounding the energy capture element (3).

    • This invention describes a Wave Energy Converter (WEC), which is the mechanical equivalent to a fully balanced 3-phase electrical generator, aimed to produce continuous power. By virtue of its 3-phase mechanic architecture, the WEC reacts force against himself and doesn't need any mooring system to react force against. The WEC is characterised by three equal legs (12,13,14), which are the three individual mechanical phases, all of them connected to a central articulation (1). The angle between each mechanical phase/leg (12,13,14) centre of mass (2,3,4) is exactly 120° degrees. Each leg/phase (12,13,14) must have the same inertia moment and is characterised by an equal large rigid mass (22,23,24) connected to each leg/phase (12,13,14). Only one of the three masses (22,23,24) interferes with Ocean waves, being the other two deeply submerged. Each leg/phase is connected by one of three equal springs (5,6,7) and one of three equal power-take-off dampers (8,9,10).
