The device may also be connected to a tether or safety line and ultimately connected to a harness attached to the user's body.

The shaft portion of each of the step-bolts includes an undercut section that is sized to match (with minimal clearance) the throat of a corresponding carabiner, which is attached to a safety harness worn by the user. The remainder of the shaft portion of the step-bolt is larger in diameter than the throat of the carabiner so that the carabiner cannot slide out toward the free end of the step-bolt.
