    • The present invention is a simple, easy to use slam latch for use on sliding doors or windows. An attachment plate (6) serves as the attachment base for the latch to the door/window and also serves as the pivot support and retainer for the catch (8). The slam latch also includes a housing (4). The construction and design of the slam latch transfers any force applied against the door or glass (such as attempts by forced entry) directly from the attachment plate to the catch, rather than from the plate through the housing to the catch. The slam latch also includes a spring mechanism (28) that is integral with the catch so as to bias it in a keeper-engaging direction and therefore does not require a separate spring for this purpose. Additionally, an embodiment of the slam latch includes a damping spring (160), integral to the catch so as to bias the catch away from the keeper when the catch is in the closed position. This damping spring reduces the contact noise from the catch as it engages the keeper and moves to the closed and locked position. The slam latch may also have an integral spring (170) as part of the housing, that mates with the integral spring of the catch to provide further biasing, smoothness, and noiseless operation.

    • A lock plate unit consists of a lock plate (25) having an inclined flange (26). The lock plate (25) has an aperture (27) leading to a recess adapted to receive a bolt of a door. Located between the recess and the lock plate is a resilient element (34). When a door is locked and the bolt of the door lock is received within the recess, if any attempt is made to force the door, force applied to the door will be transferred to the resilient element (34) where the force will be absorbed.
