    • Apparatus for extracting a pile from the ground includes a drive mechanism (2) and a first conduit (1) adapted to be inserted into the ground by the drive mechanism (2) around a pile (35) to be extracted. The apparatus also includes earth removal means (4, 7, 30) that is operable to remove earth from within the first conduit when the first conduit (1) is inserted into the ground. An extraction member (20) has engagement means (21) engageable with a pile (35) to be extracted to remove the pile (35) from the ground when an upward force is applied to the extraction member (21).

    • Apparatus for raising a post is provided having a carriage (23) mounted on a frame (1) for movement between a lowered position and a raised position, and a clamp assembly (5) mounted on the carriage (23). The clamp assembly has clamping members (33) movable towards each other to grip a post therebetween with the carriage (23) in the lowered position and the carriage is moved to the raised position to remove the post from the ground. The pulling force to remove the post acts in a vertical direction only so that bending forces transverse to the pulling direction are avoided and frame (1) rests on the ground when removing a post so that forces to remove the post are transferred to the ground.

    • A tool for gripping tubular objects such as pipes or hollow piles by contact with opposed internal or external surfaces thereof to enable the object to be recovered from its location such as in a subsea application. The tool comprises a mandrel (1) carrying several annular arrays of gripping members each comprising a body (2) a ramped wedge member (15) and a ball or roller cage (18). Hydraulic actuators (29) and control rods (31) are connected to tendons (12) which are themselves connected to the wedge members (15) and ball or roller cages (18) thus, upon engagement of the actuators (29) to draw the roller cages (18) and wedges (15) into a condition to grip the surface of the object, and selectively then to draw the wedges (15) and ball or roller cages (18) out of engagement with the surface of the object thus positively to release the tool from the object.
