    • A depressible, self-contained, solar-powered, pavement embedded marker capable of withstanding the impact of a snowplow blade or a vehicle tire by retracting below the surface of the pavement while providing effective delineation of traffic lanes. The pavement marker has a housing, a core assembly mounted in the housing, a light assembly mounted to the core assembly, and a plate disposed at the top of the core assembly to protect the core assembly and to deflect the core assembly downward into the housing in response to forces applied to the plate. The pavement marker is disposed within a cavity of the pavement of a highway or roadway. A resilient, elastic, compressible, liquid-impervious mass is disposed between the core assembly and the housing filling entirely the space therebetween to provide a seal during the movement of the core assembly relative to the housing. The resilient mass is also disposed between the housing and the walls of the cavity in the pavement to provide added resilience to the marker.

    • A retractable, reflective pavement marker for delineating traffic lanes of roadways and a method of installing the same that provides improved protection from potentially damaging vehicle tires, snowplows, and environmental conditions. The marker incorporates a reflector assembly mounted to a piston that is depressible within a housing. A biasing means returns the reflector assembly to its normal position above the road surface. A compliant adhesive cooperates with an adhesive lock formed between the housing and the opening to ensure that the marker is reliably retained within the pavement. The adhesive and a chamfered opening prevent pavement spalling due to external forces. The housing includes a removable retainer through which the piston is reciprocally received. The retainer includes a plurality of coarsely pitched lead-in threads that cooperate with a threaded housing. Multiple lead-in threads provide sufficient thread engagement, while substantially decreasing the number of rotations to achieve full engagement.

    • A resilient pavement marker (10) for delineating lanes and shoulders of roadways which is not susceptible to the forces associated with plowing of the road or damage from environmental conditions. The marker (10) incorporates an assemble unit which may be readily installed within the roadway including a base housing (20), a depressible piston (40) which carries a detachable lens assembly (50), and a compressible biasing assembly (70) to facilitate depression of the piston (40) and return to its original position. The piston (40) is retained within the housing by a cap (24) cooperating with the base. The cap (24) includes an opening (34) which has a lobed or scalloped configuration adapted to cooperate with the scalloped configuration of the piston (40) thereby preventing rotation of the piston (40) within the housing. The lens assembly (50) is removable from the piston to facilitate simple replacement of the reflective lenses without removal or disassembly of the marker (10). The compression assembly (70) fills substantially the entire interior of the housing (20) and includes closed-cell members to eliminate absorption of moisture and damage from freezing.

    • The invention relates to signalling means particularly for roads. The advantages provided by the presence of reflective or illuminated road studs has long been known. Conventional road studs stand proud of the road surface to enable the reflector or the illuminatable means to be seen, and are prone to damage by passing traffic, and particularly by the blades of snow ploughs. The object of the invention is to reduce substantially, or eliminate this disadvantage, an objective met by a construction comprising a socket, a domed lens mounted on the socket and reflective and/or illuminatable means mounted in the socket, the domed lens being of a material able to refract reflected light, or light from the illuminatable means, to allow it to be seen by drivers of oncoming vehicles.
