摘要： The invention provides a series of techniques for processing uranium containing feed materials such as uranium ores, reprocessed uranium, uranium containing residues and uranium containing spent fuel. The processes described involve fluorination of uranium containing material, separation of the uranium containing material from other materials based on ionisation thereof with the non-ionised fluorine containing material being recycled. Metallic uranium and/or plutonium and/or fission products may result. The technique offers advantages in terms of the range of materials which can be reprocessed and a reduction in the number of complexity of stages which are involved in the process.

摘要： In the reprocessing of irradiated nuclear fuel, fluorination of the fuel is carried out by feeding the fuel to an ionised gas plasma and then contacting the resultant excited species with a fluorinating agent, for example, fluorine, so as to effect fluorination. The ionised gas plasma is an inductively-coupled plasma or a microwave plasma, and the fuel is fed to the plasma in the form of a slurry or a powder fluidised by a gas. Where the slurry is formed from LWR fuel, a variety of volatile and involatile fission product fluorides and actinide fluorides is produced, so enabling the separation of UF6 from the involatile fission product fluorides.

摘要： Embodiments of a series-coupled fluidized bed reactor unit (10) are provided. In one embodiment, the reactor unit includes primary and secondary reactors (12, 14). The gas/solids inlet pipe is tangentially positioned with respect to the annular sidewall of the plenum assembly housing to induce vortex flow within the plenum assembly housing of the partially-reacted gas received from the secondary fluidized bed reactor through the gas/solids inlet pipe to promote the cyclonic separation of entrained solids from the partially-reacted gas prior to entry into the gas distributor.

The conical gas distributor has a plurality of gas flow openings directing fluorine gas flow from the windbox into the fluorination reaction vessel during the fluorination process.
