    • The invention relates to a Bayer process for the production of aluminium trihydrate comprising: a) a milling step (B) for the bauxite (10), b) a step of digestion (A) of said bauxite by a sodium aluminate liquor, c) a liquid/solid separation step (C and F), d) a decomposition step (D) for said supersaturated aluminate liquor e) after separation of the precipitated aluminium trihydrate (30), a step of concentration (E) by evaporation of said sodium aluminate liquor for recycling as digestion liquor, said process being characterised in that a calcium based compound (11, 111, 11', 111'), belonging to the group of tricalcinated aluminates, is introduced into said sodium aluminate liquor. The introduction of said calcium compound into the aluminate liquor is carried out between the exit thereof from the decomposition chain and the mixing thereof with the milled bauxite upstream of a heat exchanger.

    • A method using an ion exchange resin for recovering sodium from alkaline industrial waste, particularly 'red sludge' and sodium-containing effluents from the manufacture of alumina hydrate according to the Bayer process, is disclosed. According to the method, an aqueous suspension of the alkaline waste (1), generally the 'red sludge', is contacted with an RH cationic resin (2), preferably carboxylic resin, for selectively and quantitatively binding the sodium to the resin (5), then the sodium is quantitatively removed in the form of NaOH (8) by displacement using a lime suspension (6), preferably milk-of-lime. The resin (9) to which the calcium is bound is then regenerated for reuse at the start of the process (2) by elution of the calcium in the form of CaCl2 (12) using a dilute hydrochloric acid solution (10).

    • A process for recovering alumina values from a first liquor having an initial concentration of aluminate ions and hydroxyl ions in solution is described. The first liquor is treated with a hydroxide of a metal other than aluminium to form an aluminium-bearing layered double hydroxide and produce a treated stream of first liquor, the treated stream of first liquor having a final concentration of aluminate ions less than the initial concentration of aluminate ions. The aluminium-bearing layered double hydroxide is separated from the treated stream of first liquor. Thereafter the clarified treated stream of first liquor is returned to a first location within an alumina refinery. The separated aluminium-bearing layered double hydroxide is contacted with a solution containing carbonate ions to form a slurry comprising an insoluble salt of the metal other than aluminium and a second liquor comprising aluminate ions released from the aluminium-bearing layered double hydroxide.
