A bottle control cap (10) is attached to a bottle (12) and a micro processor (31) positioned in the bottle control cap is provided with a means to identify that control cap for others in a system of programmable control caps. The micro processor controls an electric motor (62) which opens and closes a flow passage (78) in the control cap on command in response to a command signal from a system control processor (17) located at a remote location. Preferably, the modem is in communication with the controller via transceivers and the modem (78) automatically alert the remote service center (74) when there is a need for service such as filter replacement, component replacement, or bottled water delivery or can alert the remote service center that the user desires to be contacted by the remote service center. The remote service center can check status of the station and send message to the user such as replacement filters are on the way or bottled water will be delivered on a certain date.
