    • A mandrel cupping assembly for releaseably engaging the unsupported ends of a plurality of mandrels disposed on a web winding turret assembly is disclosed. The mandrel cupping assembly comprises a cupping arm turret, a mandrel cup and cupping arm cooperatively associated with each mandrel, an outer ring guide disposed coaxially about the cupping arm turret, and an actuator cooperatively associated with each cupping arm. Each of the mandrel cups and cupping arms are disposed radially about the cupping arm turret. The mandrel cups releaseably engage the unsupported end of the mandrel against the outer ring guide. The mandrel cups have a hold-open position and a hold-closed position and are carried in a radial orbital path about the cupping arm turret while disposed in either of the hold-open position or the hold-closed position. Each actuator disposes the corresponding cupping arm from the hold-open position to the hold-closed position.

    • A web rewinding apparatus comprising a turret winder and a cupping assembly is disclosed. The turret winder has a rotatably driven turret supporting a plurality of rotatably driven mandrels capable of engaging cores upon which a web material is convolutely wound thereabout.     • A web handling apparatus includes a base, a housing, a splicing head mounted in the housing, and first and second non-rotatable swing out roll shafts, each shaft having opposite first and second ends. The roll shafts are normally positioned in the housing substantially parallel to the splicing head so that web can travel through the splicing head to or from web rolls on the roll shafts. A web accumulator mounted to the housing conducts web to or from the splicing head and the housing is movably mounted to the base so that the housing can move relative to the base in either direction parallel to the roll shafts. An actuator connected between the housing and the base moves the housing relative to the base in response to signals from a web position sensor so as to minimize the side lay of web extending to or from the apparatus. The splicing head employs special mirror image upper and lower splicing sections which facilitate preparation of the leading end of the ready web while the other web is running and the two splicing sections cooperate to make consistent high quality butt or lap splices between the two webs.

    • A web winding apparatus (90) and a method of operating the apparatus are disclosed. The apparatus can include a turret assembly (200), a core loading apparatus (1000), and a core stripping apparatus (2000). The turret assembly (200) supports rotatably driven mandrels (300) for engaging hollow cores (302) upon which a paper web (50) is wound. Each mandrel (300) is driven in a closed mandrel path (320), which can be non-circular. The core loading apparatus (1000) conveys cores (302) onto the mandrels (300) during movement of the mandrels (300) along the core loading segment (322) of the closed mandrel path (320), and the core stripping apparatus (2000) removes each web wound core (302, 51) from its respective mandrel (300) during movement of the mandrel (200) along the core stripping segment (326) of the closed mandrel path (320). The turret assembly (200) can be rotated continuously, and the sheet count per wound log (51) can be changed as the turret assembly (200) is rotating. The apparatus (90) can also include a mandrel (300) having a deformable core engaging member (3100).
