    • There is described a recto-verso printing press (100*) adapted to carry out simultaneous recto-verso printing of sheets, the printing press (100*) comprising a main printing group (5, 6, 15, 16, 25, 26) with first and second printing cylinders (5, 6) cooperating with one another to form a first printing nip between the first and second printing cylinders (5, 6) where first and second sides of sheets are simultaneously printed, the first printing cylinder (5) acting as a sheet conveying cylinder of the main printing group (5, 6, 15, 16, 25, 26). The printing press (100*) further comprises an additional printing group (7, 8, 17, 18, 27, 28) with third and fourth printing cylinders (7, 8) cooperating with one another to form a second printing nip between the third and fourth printing cylinders (7, 8) where the first and second sides of the sheets are simultaneously printed, the third printing cylinder (7) acting as a sheet conveying cylinder of the additional printing group (7, 8, 17, 18, 27, 28). The main printing group (5, 6, 15, 16, 25, 26) and the additional printing group (7, 8, 7, 18, 27, 28) are coupled to one another by means of an intermediate sheet conveying system comprising one or more sheet-transfer cylinders (10, 10', 10'') interposed between the first and third printing cylinders (5, 7).

    • A newspaper printing system wherein low viscosity newsprint ink (14a) and dampening fluid (214a) are applied to opposed lithographic printing plates (112 and 112') which simultaneously engage opposite sides of a web (W) of porous absorbent newsprint to print on both sides of the web (W). Each of the inkers (100 and 100') comprises an ink metering roller (12) in pressure indented relation with an ink transfer roller (10) having an oleophillic surface, the ink transfer roller (10) being in pressure indented relationship with a single form roller (90) which is in pressure indented relation with one of the printing plates (112 and 112'). Each of the dampeners (200 and 200') comprises a dampening fluid metering roller (212) in pressure indented relation with a dampening fluid transfer roller (210) having a hydrophilic surface, the dampening fluid transfer roller (210) being in pressure indented relation with the same single form roller (90) such that ink and dampening fluid continuously applied on the single form roller (90) is applied to each of the printing plates (112 and 112').

    • A method and apparatus for applying newsprint ink and dampening fluid to a lithographic printing plate (112), the apparatus comprising an ink metering roller (12) in rolling pressure indented relation with a transfer roller (10) having an oleophillic surface and a dampening fluid transfer roller (210) having a hydrophillic surface each of the transfer rollers being driven by a reversible variable speed motor (69, 269). The transfer rollers (10, 210) are in pressure indented relationship with a form roller (90) which transfers a thin film of ink and dampening fluid to the printing plate (112). An excess of ink is supplied to the nip between the metering roller (12) and the transfer roller (10) to produce the thin film of ink which may be further conditioned by an ink storage roller (82) prior to entry of the film of ink into the ink transfer nip (106) between the transfer roller (10) and the form roller (90). By controlling the relative speeds between the form roller (90) and the transfer roller (10), slippage occurs which meters a thin film of ink onto the form roller (90) for transfer and application to the printing plate (112).

    • The present invention concerns a printing roller for a printing machine, e.g. for a flexographic printing machine, wherein the printing roller includes a rotary and longitudinal axis and an external surface, the external surface being substantially cylindrical and adapted for mounting a plate. The new feature of a printing roller according to the invention is that the external cylindrical surface includes at least one longitudinal groove, where the at least one longitudinal groove includes a geometry with one or more surfaces, the surface or surfaces lying within a circumscribed cylindrical surface for the external surface of the printing roller. In other words, this means that the longitudinal groove or grooves are cutouts in the form of milled or ground grooves in the external cylindrical surface itself on a printing roller.
