    • An mixing section (10) for an extrusion screw has an inlet end (12) and an outlet end (90) as well as alternating wiping lands (30) and barrier lands (50). The barrier lands (50) have a greater helix angle than the wiping lands (30). The wiping lands (30) and the barrier lands (50) define inlet channels (34) which narrow toward the outlet end (90) and outlet channels (54) which widen toward the outlet end (90). A helical pattern of mixing channels (60) is cut into the wiping lands (30) and the barrier lands (50). The mixing channels (60) may be oriented generally at approximately right angles to the wiping lands (30) and the barrier lands (50). A portion of the extrudate encounters the inside wall surfaces of the mixing channels (60) and changes direction which improves the mixing of the extrudate.

    • The invention pertains to a method for dissolving PPTA or copolymers thereof in sulfuric acid using a twin screw extruder having transporting, mixing, and kneading elements comprising an entering zone, an intermediate zone, a mixing zone, a negative transport zone, a degassing zone, and a pressure build-up zone, the method comprising the steps: • transporting PPTA or copolymer thereof into the entering zone at a transport capacity low enough as to prevent sulfuric acid entering the entering zone; • introducing sulfuric acid in the entering or intermediate zone; • essentially fully filling the mixing zone to allow sufficient time to mix and dissolve PPTA or copolymer thereof in the sulfuric acid to obtain a PPTA or copolymer thereof - sulfuric acid solution; • creating after the mixing zone a negative transport zone to obtain a product lock between the mixing zone and the degassing zone; • creating a thin film of the PPTA or copolymer thereof - sulfuric acid solution in the degassing zone to degas the solution; entering the solution into the output pressure build-up zone to partially fill this zone and to leave the twin screw extruder.

    • A rotatable screw for moving material in a plasticating process along an axis through a conduit from an inlet to an outlet. The screw having a feed section, barrier melting section, reorientation section and metering section disposed sequentially downstream. The screw includes an axial core, and a helical main flight that extends radially from the core and is formed with recesses located at the first periphery and extending through the thickness of the main flight and radially toward the core. A helical secondary flight extends radially from the core between successive helical passes of the main flight, and is formed with recesses extending through the secondary flight and toward the core. Materials conveyed along the metering section can cross through the main flight at the recesses and recirculate, in addition to passing over the periphery of the secondary flight, for still further enhanced and homogenous mixing, before reaching the outlet.
