    • A gas pin assembly for use in a mold having a cavity in gas assisted injection molding includes a sleeve and an insert. The sleeve is extendable through the mold and has an inner surface defining a passageway extending from a first end of the sleeve for receiving pressurized gas and a second end for discharging pressurized gas. The insert has a first portion attachable to the inner surface of the sleeve defining the passageway and a second portion which together with the inner surface of the second end of the sleeve, when the insert is attached to the sleeve, define therebetween an opening for discharging pressurized gas. Advantageously, the insert includes a mid portion having a reduced cross-section disposed between the first and the second portions. Also disclosed are methods and gas assisted injection molding apparatus employing the gas pin assembly.

    • A molding tool for producing a component in a gas-assisted injection molding process includes a mold cavity, and an injection device with a pressurized gas source. The pressurized gas is fed into the plastic melt introduced into the mold cavity. The plastic melt is pressed against the inner walls of the mold cavity. The injection device has a piston with an injector head and moveably guided in a passage of a molding tool connected with the mold cavity. The injector head forms a part of the inner walls of the mold cavity in an idle position of the piston, and is pressed into the plastic melt as the piston moves to its operating position, so that the pressurized gas flows through the passage into the plastic melt in the mold cavity. The piston is moveable by the gas fed through the passage into the plastic melt.

    • A gas pin assembly for use in a mold having a cavity in gas assisted injection molding includes a sleeve and an insert.     • The invention provides a method and apparatus for injection moulding a plastics article having thin and thick wall sections (14; 15). A quantity of molten plastics material (19) is introduced sufficient to fill the mould cavity, followed by a further quantity of molten plastics material sufficient to pack at least the portion or portions of the mould cavity in which the thin wall section or sections (14) are formed. Pressurized fluid is introduced through the or each fluid injection member to penetrate the plastics material whereby a fluid-filled void (20) is formed within the plastics material adjacent to the inner end of the fluid injecting member, and fluid pressure is maintained within the or each void so that the void expands in response to the shrinkage of the immediately surrounding plastics material, during cooling, until the plastics material is self-supporting.

    • A readily replaceable pin-in-sleeve device (A, B) for gas-assisted injection molding is used with a two-part mold to form an injection molded product from a plastic material. A sleeve (10) has a threaded exterior surface that is shaped to be received in a socket (230) of a mold member (210) opening into a mold cavity. A longitudinally extending bore (20) extends through the sleeve. The bore has a first portion (22) adjacent the cavity, and a second, larger diameter portion (24), spaced from the cavity. A pin (40) extends through the sleeve and has a forward section and an enlarged base, which are received in the bore first and second portions, respectively. A tortuous path for an injection fluid is defined between the pin and the bore to inhibit transport of plastic material into the device when the injection fluid is vented from the mold cavity. A filter (60) positioned in the bore, behind the pin, filters traces of plastic material from the vented injection fluid. A simple tool, such as a socket wrench, quickly unscrews the device from the mold member.

    • An apparatus for use in fluid assisted injection molding of plastic material so as to form an injection molded product includes a pair of mold members (10, 12) defining when closed a sealed cavity (14), a first opening provided in one of the mold members for allowing the injection of plastic material into the cavity and a second opening provided in one of the mold members, and spaced from the first opening, for allowing the injection of the fluid into the cavity. A sleeve (50) extends through the second opening. The sleeve has a longitudinally extending bore (66) with an open first end. Preferably, the sleeve is rigidly secured in relation to the one of the mold members through which it extends. A pin (30) extend through the sleeve with the pin having a first end, located adjacent the sleeve first end, and a second end. Preferably the pin is rigidly secured in relation to the sleeve. A fluid flow passage (62) is defined between the pin and the sleeve. In another embodiment, the fluid flow passage is defined between a tube (4301) and a pin (4401). The tube is secured at one end to a bushing body (500). The bushing is, in turn, positioned between a nozzle of an injection molding machine and a sprue (4541) of a mold cavity. In yet another embodiment, a pin (220) is allowed to reciprocate in relation to a sleeve (210) so as to selectively open and close a fluid flow passage defined between the pin and the sleeve.
