    • An apparatus (2) for handling a plurality of tubular members. The apparatus comprises a tong member (32) for coupling a first tubular (152) with a second tubular (154). A first axial roller (42) is positioned on the first side of the tong member and a second axial roller (46) is positioned on the second side of the tong member. A hydrualic power pack (148) is used to provide power to the first roller, the second roller, and a tong member. A first Y-frame roller (44) is positioned on the first side of the tong member, and a second Y-frame roller (48) positioned on the second side of the tong member. In the preferred embodiment, the axial and Y-frame rollers are connected to a support member (4,6), with the first axial roller being configured for movement of the plurality of tubular members in a longitudinal direction and the second Y-frame rollers being configured for movement of the plurality of tubular member in a radial direction. A first hydraulic cylinder (74) may be attached at one end to the support member and attached at the other end to the first axial roller. The hydraulic power pack provides power to the first hydraulic cylinder so as to lower the first axial roller. The axial rollers may also include a motor (94) having a shaft, and wherein the shaft is attached to the axial rollers, with the motor being operatively connected to the power pack for imparting a rotating movement to the shaft. The apparatus may further include a master bushing (34) with a rat hole (36) that is adapted to receive the tubular members. A method for coupling and de-coupling a plurality of tubular members is also disclosed.

    • Process and device for connecting in a tight manner the end of a pipe presenting a cone thread to a corresponding tubular sleeve and subjected to high torques. The holding forces generated by the clamp chucks create some deformations in the pipe which make a tight screwing more difficult. Further, the speed changes of the massive clamp chucks require slow rhythm of work and drive powers which are not compatible with a rational mounting system. The invention provides for a two-step process, wherein an auxiliary spindle (19, 20) is screwed into the sleeve (14) which will be screwed to the extremity of the pipe (5) by means of said spindle (19, 20). This auxiliary spindle (19, 20) is then removed and the end of the pipe (5) and the sleeve (14) are further tightened one against the other under high torque by two rotating clamp chucks (2, 9). The clamp chucks are disposed in such a manner that they allow eccentric and angle variations to take up the mounting tolerances of the pipe sections (5, 14). The clamp flanges (26) are hydraulically operated and hold the pipe sections (5, 14) substantially around the whole contour thereof. The device is preferably used for the preassembly at the factory of pipes aimed at being engaged in oil-well drillings.
