    • An aeration tank used in a method of treating effluent includes a pipe for transporting the effluent from the source to the tank bottom and a discharge duct having a siphon effect for tapping off an overflow from the tank as more effluent is added from the source. An array of generally horizontal pipes is located in the tank having a series of exit holes along their length and connected to an air plenum at one side wall for feeding air into the end of each of the pipes, the pipes being arranged in columns one above another such that the air escapes from the pipes of the array through the holes to inject air into the effluent in the tank at positions spaced transversely, longitudinally and vertically. The pipes have flat upper discharge surfaces. Above each pipe is provided a collector channel which collects bubbles as they get too large and channels them to one end to be replaced by fresh small bubbles from a next above pipe.

    • The present invention, a submarine-type liquid mixer provides a mixing device (25) that contains a gas-trapping component (30) in the shape of a cap or umbrella with an open bottom, or a closed vessel, which is centered upon, and slides up and down along a vertical pole-like structure (50) within a tank or other enclosure (10) containing liquid, or alternately within an open liquid such as a lake or pool. When gas (35) is formed naturally in the liquid and is caught under the opening of the cap-shaped component (30), or is directly pumped into the same, it displaces the liquid volume under the cap-shaped component (30) to the extent that the cap-shaped component (30), has enough buoyancy to rise to the top of the enclosure (10). The gas (35) is then released through valving (53) installed on the top of the cap-shaped component (30), causing it to lose buoyancy and sink back to the bottom of the enclosure (10). This process then repeats itself, the up-and-down movement of the cap-shaped component (30) mixing the liquid. When the gas-trapping component is a closed container, gas may be introduced or withdrawn through a flexible hose (60).

When gas (35) is formed naturally in the vessel (10) and is caught under the opening of the cap-shaped component, or is directly pumped into the same, it displaces the liquid volume under the gas-trapping component (30) to the extent that the gas-trapping component (30), which is also generally the mixing device (25), has the buoyancy to rise to the top of the vessel (10). The gas (35) is then released through valving (55) installed on top of the gas-trapping component (30), causing it to lose its buoyancy and sink back to the bottom of the vessel (10).

    • A counterbalanced, dual submarine-type liquid mixer provides a pair of counterbalanced mixing devices that move at opposing ends of a balance bar (40) suspended above the surface of a liquid (10) to be mixed. The bar (40) is able to pivot so as to vertically move its ends (44, 46) alternately between a raised and a lowered position in such a manner that when one of the mixing devices is in a raised position in the liquid (10), the other of the mixing devices is in the lowered position and each of the two mixing devices tends to counterbalance the other. Each mixing device is buoyed upwardly in the liquid (10) by the buoyant force of a gas captured below a concave surface (82) of the mixing device and also by the negative buoyant force of the other mixing device when it has exhausted its buoyant gas. Alternately, each of the mixing devices, on its downward stroke is moved downwardly by its own weight (negative buoyancy) and by the buoyant action of the other mixing device which moves simultaneously on its upward stroke. Buoyant gas is injected and removed from under the mixing device's concave surface (82) by a gas conduit channel (74) integral with a supporting rod extending from the balance bar (40). The mixing device, in an alternate embodiment, uses a cable (220) for interconnecting dual rigid caps (80) or one cap (80) and a counterweight (230) to accomplish identical objectives.
