    • A portable vein locating device (10) includes one or more infrared illuminators (12, 25) for transmission through a patient's skin of infrared light and a vein imaging module (17, 29) for determining the location of a vein beneath the skin by detecting the absence of backscattered infrared light. As the device (10) is passed over a patient's skin, infrared light from the infrared illuminators (12, 25) penetrates through the patient's skin and is absorbed by veins under the skin but scattered by the fat and other tissues surrounding the veins. Backscattered infrared light from the areas about the veins is detected by the vein imaging module (17, 29), which includes a number of infrared light detectors (18), for detecting the backscattered light, and a display (19, 32), for indicating to the medical caregiver the location beneath the skin of detected veins.

    • A negative pressure wound therapy apparatus can include a wound dressing, a fluid collection container, a vacuum pump comprising a pump motor, and tubing. Additionally, the apparatus can include a pressure sensor that measures a pressure in the tubing. One or more tubes can channel a fluid between the wound dressing, the fluid collection canister, and the pump. In addition, first and second control circuits can be provided for controlling the pump motor without using a processor. The first control circuit can generate a difference signal between a desired pressure input and a pressure sensor input, and can further generate a motor control signal responsive to the difference signal. Moreover, a second control circuit can provide an override signal based at least in part on the difference signal and at least one reference signal. The override signal beneficially overrides the motor control signal to prevent the pump motor from stalling.

    • A portable pump (10) for use with a gradient compression bandage (11) generally comprises a selectively actuable source of pressurized fluid (22) in communication with a plurality of outlets; a plurality of selectively actuable latching valves (17-20) interposed between the fluid source and each outlet; and a controller (21) for controlling electrical power supplieS to the fluid source and the latching valves, thereby selectively actuating the fluid source and the latching valves. Portability is achieved through battery power conservation means such as utilization of latching valves having an open state and a closed state and adapted to require electrical power only in transition between states and utilization of an electrical controller adapted to selectively switch power to the air compressor and the latching valves as required. The fluid source may also comprise a one-way check valve (23) for preventing back flow and leakage of the pressurized fluid through the air compressor. A pressure sensor (27) for obtaining a pressure measurement at each fluid outlet is also selectively powered by the controller. A power supply system (45) allows full battery operation of the portable pump. This system comprises a battery recharge circuit (46) adapted to automatically discontinue battery charging upon reaching of a three-hour time limit for charging, detection of a negative battery charge voltage curve or measurement of an excessive battery temperature.
