    • The present disclosure relates to methods and apparatuses for radio access technology (RAT) management for user terminals with a connection on at least one RAT. There is disclosed a method for controlling a selection of a RAT for traffic flow of a user terminal comprising the steps of receiving information on a user plane of a serving RAT; using the received information to determine a characteristic indicative of an expected quality for a connection between the user terminal and a candidate cell of a candidate RAT; comparing the user terminal's connection quality on a serving cell of the serving RAT to the characteristic indicative of the expected quality for a connection between the user terminal and the candidate cell of the candidate RAT; and determining on the basis of the comparison whether the user terminal should change its traffic flow to the candidate cell of the candidate RAT or maintain its traffic flow on the serving cell of the serving RAT.

    • A mobile telecommunications network includes: a radio access network having radio means (2000) for wireless communication with a plurality of terminals (10) registered with the telecommunications network and control means (700) operable to provide services to the users of the terminals connected thereto, and a core (2030) including a store of policy information (9, 36) for respective ones of the terminals (10), and distribution means operable to provide to the control means associated with one of the terminals the policy information; wherein the control means is operable to store the policy information together with an indicator of the version of the policy information during periods when the terminal is disconnected from the control means, the control means including checking means for checking the currency of the policy using the indicator of the version of the policy and means for applying the stored policy information to the terminal when the terminal re-connects to the control means if the checking means determines that the stored policy is current.

    • Authentication control for devices within a cellular network is provided. The authentication between a device and an authenticating entity within the cellular network allows the device to access a non-cellular network via one or more access points. Information is obtained about a load caused by the devices located within a cell or cell group performing authentication. If it is determined that the load requires to be controlled, the cellular network controls performance of the authentication by a set of the devices. An indication that performance of the authentication by a device must be controlled is received and performance of the authentication by the device is controlled based on the indication. An identity of a cell or group of cells providing coverage in an area where an access point is located is included within a field of a RADIUS or DIAMETER message, forwarded by the access point to an authenticating entity.

    • Group communication within a mobile telecommunications network having a plurality of User Equipment (UE) can be achieved. At a first UE, there is received an identification of a multicast group from which a second UE of the plurality of mobile terminals is to receive data. If the first UE is not a member of the multicast group, a request is sent from the first UE to join the multicast group. The first UE is identified at an application server associated with the multicast group. Data packets associated with the multicast group are subsequently communicated from the application server to the first UE and these are broadcast from the first UE to be received by the second UE.
