    • A reader assembly (20) for reading a data carrier (48) having at least one data track located at a prearranged data track position thereon. The reader assembly includes a transducer (30) having at least one data pickup element on a front face thereof. A guide element (23) defines a guide slot having two side wall members and a bottom wall member for guiding a data carrier (48) through the reader assembly (20). One side wall member has an access window (55) which permits communication between the transducer (30) and the data carrier (48). A frame element (32) carries the transducer (30) in a prearranged location thereon. The guide element (23) and the frame element (32) include a cooperative registration arrangement providing multiple registered positions for reading different data tracks. A pair of resilient hook arms (51, 52) on the guide element (23) cooperative with a pair of hook engaging surfaces (65A, 65B) on the frame element (32) to hold the two elements together.

    • A data terminal (20) having a card reader assembly (23) for reading a data card having at least a pair of magnetic stripes (T1, T2, T3) formed thereon at adjacent ones of at least three defined magnetic data track locations thereon. The terminal includes a read head (30) having two magnetic pickup elements (30B and 30C) on a front face thereof, the pickup elements being separated by a distance corresponding generally to the distance between the separate magnetic data track locations on the data card. A housing assembly defines a card guide slot (44) adapted to guide a data card during a manual swipe of the card through the card reader assembly. The card guide slot (44) comprises first (37) and second (38) opposite side wall sections and a bottom wall section (39) with one of the side wall sections defining an access aperture (29) for admitting the read head into the card guide slot. A read head positioning arrangement is cooperatively associated with the card guide slot for mounting the read head in a preselected position relative to the bottom wall section of the card guide slot such that the magnetic pickup elements are positioned for detecting a prearranged set of magnetic data tracks located at one of the upper two data track locations and the lower two data track locations.
