摘要： A strain of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei EM025-11 is described. The strain has an unusually broad catabolic activity including for prebiotics not normally utilized by commensal lactobacilli and is therefore suitable for inclusion in a synbiotic combination. The strain has also been found to adhere to but did not invade intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), which is an important probiotic trait (Fig. 1), and also demonstrates anti-inflammatory activity.

摘要： A recombinant gram positive commensal bacterium engineered for heterologous expression of Tad pilus. The Tad pilus is a Tad pilus from a Bifidobacterium selected from Bifidobacterium breve and Bifidobacterium longum. The bacterium is additionally engineered for heterologous expression in-situ in the human gut of a soluble biopharmaceutical product such as a cytokine, an enzyme, a hormone, and an antibody or antibody fragment. The invention also provides a method of treating an inflammatory disease of the human gut comprising administering a recombinant gram positive commensal bacterium of the invention, whereby the recombinant bacterium colonises the patients gut and effects in-situ expression of a soluble biopharmaceutical product in the patient's gut.

摘要： The invention describes peptide, and proteins and fusion proteins comprising the peptides, that are capable of increasing the proliferation of cells, especially epithelial cells in the mammalian gastrointestinal tract. The peptides comprise the hydrophilic domain of the TadE subunit of the Tad pilus of Bifidobacterium, especially the pilus encoded by the Tad2003 gene cluster identified in Bifidobacterium breve UCC2003, and functional fragments of the hydrophilic domain. The invention informs new treatments for diseases and conditions that involve attenuated epithelial cell proliferation and growth, such as inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract and trauma of the skin including burns and other wounds. The invention also informs treatments of newborn babies to promote proliferation and growth of gut epithelial tissue by administration of agents comprising the peptide of the invention in the form of infant formula.

摘要： A kit useful for determining the phage susceptibility of one or more strains of Lactococcus lactis by means of multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is described. The kit comprises: (a) a first primer pair adapted to generate a first amplicon correlating to a region of the cwps operon that is unique to L. lactis strains MG1363 and SK11; (b) a second primer pair adapted to generate a second amplicon correlating to a region of the cwps operon that is unique to L. lactis strains IL1403 and KF147; (c) a third primer pair adapted to generate a third amplicon correlating to a region of the cwps operon that is uniqueto L. lactis strains UC509.9 and CV56; and (d) optionally, a control primer pair adapted to amplify a sequence conserved in L.lactis. The methods and kits of the invention may be employed to type strains of L. lactis into phage-sensitivity groups, and sub-type the phage-sensitivity groups according to phage sensitivity. The invention also described methods for formulation of mixed defined starter cultures using strains from different phage sensitivity groups.
