    • Smelting apparatus comprises a vessel (11) and a solids injection lance (27a) extending through an opening in the wall of vessel barrel (16) into the interior space of the vessel. Lance (27a) includes a central core tube (31) through which to pass solid particulate material into the vessel and an annular cooling jacket (32) surrounding the central core tube (31) throughout a substantial part of its length. Lance (27a) has a mounting structure (61) comprising a tubular part (60) extended about cooling jacket (32) and about twice the diameter of the cooling jacket. Tubular part (60) fits within a tubular lance mounting bracket (62) welded to the shell (16a) of vessel barrel (16) to extend outwardly from the vessel. The lance is held within mounting bracket (62) by clamping bolts (66) acting between flanges (63,65) on tubular part (60)and tubular bracket (62), such that the forward end of part (60) is flush with the inner surface of the refractory lining (16b) of vessel barrel (16). On release of the clamping bolts and removal of a spacer ring (67) between flanges (63,65), lance (27a) can be driven inwardly for some distance by sliding within tubular bracket (62) to break slag accretions to permit withdrawal of the lance.

    • A metallurgical lance (27a) to inject solid particulate material into a vessel comprises a central core tube (31) through which to pass the solid particulate material and an internally water cooled annular cooling jacket (32) surrounding the central core tube. Core tube (31) is held in spaced apart relationship within cooling jacket (32) by a series of spacer collars (83) projecting outwardly from the core tube to engage the inner periphery of the cooling jacket so as to form an annular gas flow passage between the central core tube and the cooling jacket. A purge gas inlet (85) at the rear end of the lance allows a purge gas such as nitrogen to be admitted into the gas flow passage (84) to flow forwardly through the lance and exit the lance at the forward end of the cooling jacket. Central core tube (86) is fitted with a bulbous projection (86) within the forward end of cooling jacket (32) to define a constricted gas outlet nozzle (87).

    • A novel method for the production of light-stable and process-stable lignocellulosic materials, in particular, the production of mechanical wood pulps with much improved light and process stability is described, as well as the resulting pulps of improved light and process stability and papers containing such pulps. The novel method involves the reaction of lignocellulosic materials such as bleached chemithermomechanical pulps (BCTMP) with (a) a water-soluble, fibre-reactive yellowing inhibitor possessing two or more secondary amino or ammonium (-NHR' or -HN + HR'), tertiary amino or ammonium (-NR'R" or -HN + R'R"), and/or quaternary ammonium (-N + R'R''R"') functional groups in an aqueous medium, or (b) a water-soluble, fibre-reactive hindered amine light stabilizer possessing said amino or ammonium functional groups in an alkaline peroxide bleaching medium or in an aqueous medium with a subsequent bleaching of the materials in an alkaline peroxide bleaching medium. Examples of the water-soluble, fibre-reactive yellowing inhibitors are the novel, N-(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-oxyl-piperidin-4-yl)-N'-{2-[2-(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-oxyl-piperidin-4-ylamino)-ethylamino]-ethyl}-ethane-1,2-diamine (abbreviated as TETA-2TEMPO) and its hydroxylamine hydrochloride derivative, N-(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-hydroxyl-piperidin-4-yl)-N'-{2-[2-(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-hydroxyl-piperidin-4-ylamino)-ethylamino]-ethyl}-ethane-1,2-diamine hexahydrochloride (abbreviated as TETA-2TEMPOH-6HCl).

    • A hot gas injection lance (26) for injecting hot gas into a vessel (11) is made of three modules (26A, 26B and 26C) which all fabricated separately and brought together in successive steps and connected together by releasable fastenings.
