    • The invention relates to a method and agent for differential diagnosis of thyroid tumours, particularly for distinguishing benign thyroid nodules from thryroid carcinomas. The method and the agents are used in clinical diagnosis of tumours. By comparatively analysing gene expression in thyroid carcinomas and benevolent thyroid nodules, it is possible to identify differentially expressed genes, whose expression in the case of thyroid carcinomas or benevolent thyroid nodules, is specifically increased or reduced. The inventive method, wherein RNA is isolated from a tissue sample of the thyroid and the expression of at least one of the differentially expressed genes is quantified in the isolated RNA, makes it possible to distinguish between benevolent thyroid nodules and thyroid carcinomas. The percentage of thyroid punctures, wherein no sufficient judgement is possible according to prior art, is minimized and unnecessary operations on the thyroid can be avoided.
