    • A concentrated detergent formulation effective to remove grease includes a glycol ether solvent system in combination with a high concentration of a surfactant system stably dispersed in water. The surfactant system is preferably a combination of a hydrotrope and a nonionic surfactant with a concentration preferably in the range of 7 % or greater. The glycol ether solvent system can be any of a number of glycol ethers with dipropylene glycol n-butyl ether and dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether preferred. The formulation can be used at high concentrations to effectively remove baked-on grease in deep fryers and clean parking lots and can be used at a lower concentration as a presoak and even at a more dilute concentration for general purpose degreasing and spray and wipe cleaner. The product is low alkaline and non-corrosive.

    • A method of laundering oily items comprises laundering said items in a wash solution which includes a surfactant system and a source of alkalinity. The source of alkalinity is an alkali metal aluminate preferably sodium aluminate at a concentration effective to have at least about 25 ppm of the alkali aluminate present in the wash solution measured as alumina. The wash solution is then separated from the laundered items and its pH reduced to about 9 or less. A destabilizing polymer such as diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride can be added. This combination causes the oil and grease to separate from the wash solution and float to the surface along with the sodium aluminate. If the concentration of the sodium aluminate is above about 100 ppm preferably about 250 ppm, there is no need to add the destabilizing polymer. This does not affect the overall efficiency of the detergent, yet significantly improves the ability to separate the oil and grease from the waste wash solution.

    • The dimorphic yeast Candida rugosa has an unusual codon-usage which hampers the functional expression of genes derived from this yeast in a conventional heterologous host. Lipases produced by this yeast are extensively used in industrial bioconversions, but commercial lipase samples contain several different isoforms encoded by the LIP genes family. In a first laborious attempt the LIP1 gene, encoding the major isoform of the C. rugosa lipases (CRLs), was systematically modified by site-directed mutagenesis to gain functional expression in S. cerevisiae. As alternative approach, the gene (1688 bp) was completely synthesised with an optimised nucleotide sequence in terms of heterologous expression in yeast and simplified genetic manipulation. The synthetic gene was functionally overexpressed in Pichia pastoris. The recombinant CRL was produced at high level and purity, accounting for 90-95 % of the secreted proteins. The physical-chemical and catalytic properties of the recombinant lipase were compared with those of a commercial, non-recombinant C. rugosa lipase preparation.
