    • A method of selectively enabling one of a first and a second operating mode in a first network device is presented. The first network device has a wireless receiver and transmitter for providing bi-directional communication with a mobile station through a first wireless link, for providing access to a network. In the first operating mode the wireless transmitter is not continuously enabled, and in the second operating mode the wireless transmitter is continuously enabled. In the first operating mode the first network device, receives, from a second network device, status information about a second wireless link maintained between the second network device and the mobile station, and sends, at predetermined time intervals, probe requests to the mobile station. The wireless transmitter is enabled for sending the probe request and disabled thereafter. The first network device receives a response to the probe request from the mobile station and determines a spatial distance of the mobile station to the first network device and to the second network device. Depending on the determined distance the first network device switches to the second operating mode, allowing association of the mobile station with the first network device via the first wireless link.

    • A method (30) and system (10) for controlling wireless local area network (WLAN) user quality in a multi-access point environment is provided. In order to ensure good quality of service/user experience in a multi-access point Wi-Fi™ setup in which a user roams with a station (14), the access points (11, 12) continuously or at intervals assess the wireless environment's quality and report to a control entity (13). The control entity (13) determines, from the assessment data, alternative target access points (11, 12) that could be used in case the link quality of a current connection between an access point (11) and the station (14) falls below a predefined value. The control entity (13) then instructs the access point (11) to actively disconnect the station (14) and selects a new target access point (12) to accept the stations (14) connection request.

    • In a wireless communication system comprising a mobile terminal and at least two access points, each access point is adapted to provide data communication with the mobile terminal within a service area of the access point through a wireless interface over a selected one of a number of channels. A method of controlling selection of an access point comprises controlling one or more further access points having service areas adjacent or overlapping with a service area of a first access point, to which a first mobile terminal is associated, to send probe request messages to the first mobile terminal, and determining, for each of the one or more further access points and from a response received from the first mobile terminal in response to the corresponding probe request message, a respective first value representing a quality of a connection between the respective access point and the first mobile terminal. Selected ones of the one or more further access points are controlled to accept a future association request from the first mobile terminal, while the not selected access points are controlled to reject a future association request from the mobile terminal.
